Hi everyone, I'm new to the list, so first my gratitude to everyone involved in the creation and enhancement of this package...where has it been all my life? An outstanding and accessible framework with clear tutorials...except for the following! I've gathered from reading archives and the reference manual that direct program control of the camera is not an option. I have explored scale/range, center, forward, and the mouse.camera attributes to where I have a couple of clues. But how can I do the following: I want to establish a set of fixed views of my scene that can be called up from controls (button or menu). Ideally, I'd like to mouse my way into the correct view, then save the camera position for recall. I see the camera position is modified, but when I zoom in by mousing there is no change to "scale" , or center, or forward, or anything else I can set. Am I running up against a buried "manual_scale" that I can't read or write? Even if I can only establish the right scale programmatically, that's fine. But, if I allow the user to zoom and rotate around the scene, how can I go back to a nominal camera distance to establish those fixed viewpoints that will be designed to illustrate the underlying physics? Hence the subject line, is there such thing as a camera reset? Can I get the effect by toggling userzoom, or autoscale? Or do I have to just shut of userzoom entirely? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Bill Ward |

Hi all, I am replying to my own email to say the issue (see below) has been resolved. I can't reproduce exactly what solved the problem but the steps I took involved uninstalling, rebuilding and installing a number of fink packages, including visual-py2.?, as well as fink's boost package and all libraries with gtk in the name. Visual on Mac OS 10.4.2 works now fine for me (both visual-py23 and visual-py24). Thanks, Hans On Wed, 7 Sep 2005, Hans Fangohr wrote: > Hi Martin, > > thank your very much for your help with this. > >>>> Could you try to find the crash log that should have been created? >>>> Something like ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/python2.4.crash.log. >>>> If it is too long, send it to me off list. >>> >>> I'll email it to you off list. >> >> From the crashed thread >> >>> Thread 2 Crashed: >>> 0 libX11.6.dylib 0x9ca2b938 XVisualIDFromVisual + 0 >>> 1 libgtkgl-2.0.1.dylib 0x0174d2f8 gdk_gl_context_share_new + 108 >>> (gdkgl.c:141) >>> 2 libgtkgl-2.0.1.dylib 0x0174dd58 gtk_gl_area_share_new + 188 >>> (gtkglarea.c:131) >>> 3 cvisualmodule.so 0x011c67d0 >>> visual::xglContext::initWindow(char const*, int, int, int, int, int) + 316 >>> (bundle1.s:283) >> >> it looks like this is a problem between libgtkgl and X11. Having more trouble than expected trying to accomplish some feedback when a scene is being zoomed. Specifically, I have reason to want to know the distance of the camera from the scene.center throughout the zoom. But I am finding that the mouse events that would allow me to accomplish this easily only apply to the left mouse events. I can identify a "middle" press, but if I do a while scene.mouse.press == 'middle': <get me the distance> I can't find a way to get an event that will turn it off. Same with scene.mouse.button. Anyone have ideas? Art |

Rebuild gtkglarea2 anyway and see if this changes anything. Done that (using 'fink rebuild gtkglaerea2'). Unfortunately, no success. I'll attach the crash log below (not sure which parts of it are important). (I did also recompile [using rebuild] python-py24 and visual-py24; just in case...) Any suggestions very welcome. What I would try to look at is: 1. by checking modification dates, check if your /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.6.dylib or the file it points to are not leftovers from an earlier (Panther) installation of X11. The Apple installer plays such tricks sometimes. 2. See if the gtkglarea2 package was updated after you updated your system and your X11 or if it was perhaps compiled under an older version of OSX and X11. 3. Rebuild gtkglarea2 anyway and see if this changes anything. -- Martin |

Hi, encouraged by the success, I have tried running vpython on Mac OS X, too. I have installed visual-py24 as suggested (activating 'unstable' in fink etc). Having started Apple's X server, I get a Bus error reported when I try to open a window: Vigor10:/usr fangohr$ python2.4 Python 2.4.1 (#1, Aug 31 2005, 19:34:51) [GCC 4.0.0 20041026 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 4061)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import visual >>> a=visual.sphere() Bus error I get the same error when running visual-py23: Vigor10:/usr fangohr$ python2.3 Python 2.3.5 (#1, Sep 1 2005, 03:43:21) [GCC 4.0.0 20041026 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 4061)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import visual >>> a=visual.sphere() Bus error Vigor10:/usr fangohr$ I was wandering whether this relates to problems with X, but matplotlib for example works just fine. Any suggestions as to what the source of this might be, or how I can track this down are most welcome. Many thanks, Hans P.S. There is now a Fink package for vpython version 3.2.1. If you have Fink installed on Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and the unstable tree enabled, you can get it via: fink selfupdate fink install visual-py23 This will download and build vpython and all necessary prerequisites. It doesn't build a special version of gcc, apparently the ones that are in OSX 10.4.2 and Xcode-tools-2.1 are good enough (or at least I didn't come across the bugs they still may have). There are actually 2 variants, visual-py23 and visual-py24. Which one you want to install depends mainly on the versions of the dependencies you perhaps already have installed: python, numarray, numeric. Both variants can be installed simultaneously, there are no conflicts, and the dependencies are chosen and built automatically. The binary executables are called vpython2.3 and vpython2.4, respectively. When fink asks you at the beginning of the build process to choose whether you want to install boost1.32-py23 or boost1.32-py24, you can choose either one if you have the corresponding version of Fink's python installed, they are identical. If you don't have Fink's python installed yet, choose the version that corresponds to the version of visual you are going to install, or otherwise you will end up building two versions of python. This is no problem, however, except for compilation time, both versions of python coexist peacefully (not both variants of boost1.32-pyXY, however). -- Martin |

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.2 with all updates applied, dev tools, and the very latest Fink distribution with both Python24 and Python23 installed. I'm trying to build VPython from the sourceforge package by running the mkdist_osx.sh script, which worked perfectly under 10.3.x. VPython has been installed in one of our computer labs but our IT guys used TQCrunas. At least it seems to be running properly. Last night I created a Moveable Python CD on my XP box as home as per instructions previously posted here. The CD seemed to work correctly at home. I brought it to work today and discovered that the computers in our computer labs have the CD drives locked down and therefore will not recognize CDs. (Can anyone explain the logic buying reasonably functional computers and then locking them down so they can't be used in computer literacy courses?) So now I won't be able to provide my students with quick VPython updates. When I try running IDLE from the CD in my Win2k box at work, I get the following error message: E:\movpy-0.4.6-2.4-standard\movpy\movpyw.exe.log could not be opened: permission denied It's attempting to open a file on the CD but this didn't happen on the XP box at home. What accounts for the difference? Now, when I try to run IDLE from the CD on a computer in my regular classroom (in which the CD drives are enabled for use by my astronomy classes), I get no error messages at all but nothing executes. I've no idea what to look for to fix the problem. I've tried everything labeled "IDLE" that I could find and no luck. What would I need to do to execute the VPython version of IDLE (IDLE Fork?) on the CD? Joe Heafner heafnerj(at)ctc(dot)net |
