Second - since cvisualmodule.so linked correctly, but the boost-python library cannot be found by the runtime linker, find out where Boost.Python was installed and also find out if that location is on the library search path. See ld.so(8) and ldconfig(8). My hunch is that Boost was installed under /usr/local and /usr/local/lib isn't in /etc/ld.so.conf. Finally, since libboost_python.so.1.33.0 cannot be found at all, if this extension module was loaded by Python, you should get an ImportError or somesuch when you try to "from visual import *". Make sure you don't have an older version of Visual installed somewhere. -Jonathan |

When you instantiate any VPython renderable object, any extra parameters you provide will be automatically added as attributes of whatever you are creating. So: >>> x = sphere( name='texte') >>> print x.name 'texte' > I made 4 sphere, and i want to see sphere.name on a label when i click > on a sphere. See also the display.getclick(), display.getevent() functions. These return a reference to the nearest (closest to the screen) VPython object that was clicked (if any was below the mouse cursor). You can then have a label associated with each sphere, and control it's visibility when you process the event. If you wanted to always move the label and sphere together around the screen, you can easily wrap them together in a common frame. HTH, -Jonathan |

I haven't had a chance to look at the files you sent, but I can address point 1 in your question. In INSTALL.txt you will find the following: If you have multiple versions of Python installed, and the one named 'python' that is first on your PATH (identified with `which python`) is not the one you want to build Visual for, specify the correct interpreter by setting the PYTHON environment variable to the desired interpreter's full path. And on the Linux download page at vpython.org this point is also made: If you want to use a different version of Python than the one found with "which python", or (b) is not appropriate, specify both the particular Python and where to install Visual: PYTHON=/somewhere1/bin/python ../visual-x.x.x/configure --prefix=/somewhere2 If "somewhere1" and "somewhere2" are different, you must also add the "somewhere2" directory to Python's module search path. For details, at www.python.org read section 4.1 (Modifying Python's Search Path) in the section Installing Python Modules of the Python 2.3 on-line documentation. The key point is that --prefix governs where you put stuff, while PYTHON refers to the path to your Python, which are two different things (at least in principle). I have had, so far, 2 problems installing VPython. 1) During the configure stage, although I run the configure script as: ./configure --prefix=/home/james/binPYTHON given that I hold a local version of Python, the script found $PYTHON=/usr/bin/python, which is the root version. I had to (manually) insert PYTHON=/home/james/binPYTHON/bin/python to proceed with correct configuration. Without it the configure script was telling me that it was unable to find Numeric and Numarray. 2) For the compilation error (which is beyond my ability to repair), please look at the attached files Thank you very much fort your help J -- Dr James Foadi PhD York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL) Department of Chemistry University of York Heslington York YO10 5YW UK |

I'm running the latest VPython, with Boost 1.33.1, Python 2.4.2, and gcc 4.0.2 (Debian 4.0.2-8) with no problems. I did see this error on my machine a long time ago and I think it was due to either building two parts of the system with different versions of G++ or different builds of Python. Can you run $ ldd /usr/local/lib/python2.4/site-packages/cvisualmodule.so | grep "python\|libstdc" The output should include only one libpython..., only one libboost_python..., and only one libstdc++... -Jonathan |

I wouldn't favor that, as the effect is easily achievable using label. You can even associate the label with the sphere. If you run the atttached routine you can click a sphere and see its name, click again to remove the name. Leau gave a very clear report of a bug with sliders (in visual.controls), for which I'm grateful. It turned out that the controls module never had treated a nonzero minimum correctly for sliders. I attach a corrected version (and I'll update VPython installers soon). On Windows, this goes in C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\visual. Bruce Sherwood |

Laney Mills wrote: Hi Bruce, Gary has helped me with a couple of Python questions. Since you use VPython a lot, do you know how to adjust the dot size for vpython 2d plots. I want to make the Mandelbrot set, which needs the highest resolution I can get, one pixel per dot if possible. I think the control of dot size is done deep down in some library function called by vpython. I was just hoping you had seen how to make that happen. From within vpython, the minium dot size is much larger than one pixel. Otherwise, vpython is perfect for the job. Thanks, Laney Mills, College of Charleston ------------------------------ I replied: Unfortunately there isn't currently any simple way to do that. The module in question is graph.py (invoked by importing visual.graph), which I wrote (on Windows, it is in C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\visual). For dots it uses a lower-case text "o" because a graph typically has different x and y scales, so any of the standard Visual objects wouldn't be dot-like, including a small sphere (which would typically end up being an ellipsoid). I would however think that for something like the Mandelbrot set there's no good reason to use visual.graph at all; just use a standard VPython window and plot very small spheres (though in any case you may run into problems rendering a very large number of objects). If for some reason you want to use visual.graph, you could modify it to plot small spheres instead of o's, since you may well have uniform axes (same x and y scales). Bruce Sherwood (And later Mills raised the possibility of using the Python Imaging Library, which might indeed be the appropriate tool for this project.) |

All Visual objects have the attribute "visible". Just set it to 0 (or False) for invisible, 1 (or True) for visible. Hi, Bruce and all; Thanks for all the help you've given me in the past, and thanks _especially_ for ' scene.stereo='crosseyed' '. In order to speed up my program, I'm recoding it in C++ (and estimating about 40 times speed increase over Python), which I know very little about (but am slowly fighting my way through the molasses...). VPython gives me my views into my Python program's calculation space, and I can watch my points packing themselves. To do the same with C++ is going to take _way_ more knowledge of C++, Windows (microsoft's) and probably OpebGL, than I'm likely to obtain in my lifetime (which by now is not what it was when I was young (*g*)). The program itself is mostly vector math, which I'm fighting into submission now, and since I've got all the rest of the needed functions (randomizings, file readings/writings, database makings (dynamic arrays versus lists and dictionaries etc.) and user input/output handled in the C++ version, all I'm going to be facing soon is visibility into my calculation space. Hence the query: is there any way to interface my C++ _calculation_ system, with VPython's OpenGL operations or with VPython itself, so that I can use (a modified version of) what I already have with VPython, to do the lookings-in-to what the C++ calculation program is doing? IOW, can I call out from within the C++ program, to the VPython visualization system? Thanks! Peace JB jb...@te... Web: http://tetrahedraverse.com |
