[vimplugin-devel] Problems with installation

Hello vimplugin guys,

I want to test vimplugin. I've followed the installation instructions on
the website. First some information about my system:

Gentoo Linux
eclipse-sdk 3.2.1-r2
current vimplugin
vim/gvim is located under /usr/bin=20

So I've installed the eclipse plugin, verified the location of the gvim
binary. When I want to open a file using the "open-with"-dialog and
choose "vim", eclipse just hangs. On the console I can read:=20

Trying to start vim
Server started and listening
Started vim

Then I can only kill eclipse!

I've also downloaded eclipse packages from www.eclipse.org, but there is
no difference.

Somewhere on the page the Java Transaction API is mentioned... I've
noticed, that on my system dev-java/jta was not installed. So I
installed it, but nothing changed... how can I check whether jta is
"enabled"? Is there a special eclipse plugin?=20

[vimplugin-devel] VimPlugin under FreeBSD

Hi all,

today I had my ports-day (ok, I just want to add some ports for
eclipse-plugins to make it easier for FreeBSD'ies to use eclipse).

I even tried out Vimplugin-0.3.1 but when I open a file using it,
an external gVim pops up and the eclipse IDE hangs.

Is there anything I can do to help to figure out the problem?
The FreeBSD I'm using is:

PS: No, I'm no Java developer and can't install Plugin-Development tools
     and figure out the problem ;)
     I can only code to one project at once and have 3 in pipeline ^^

[vimplugin-devel] Vimplugin just hangs under Windows/Cygwin

Hi, I've just installed vimplugin using these instructions:
http://vimplugin.sourceforge.net/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Community.Installationand
it hangs when trying to open a file. This is on Windows XP with
Eclipse
3.3.1.1. I'm also using Cygwin. I've tried pointing the vimplugin path at
Cygwin vim.exe and gvim.exe and I've also downloaded the Windows gvim build
and tried that and none of them work. I get the messages:

Trying to start vim
> Started vim
> Server started and listening
>

Eclipse is then totally hung.

but then I get those same messages if I point the path at cat.exe! There are
some mysterious Port/Host/Password settings but I can't find any
documentation on them.

Also I was a bit confused by the fact that the main web site refers to
vimplugin depending on JTA (is this something I need to download
separately?) and other pages I've seen that say it uses a Netbeans protocol
that requires a special vim build.

I suppose it's a runtime error. Can you launch eclipse from a shell and
see if the exception appears there?

I just tried my self from a clean account. Everything works as expected
for me:

  * Ubuntu feisty
  * java 1.5 (via ubuntu)
  * eclipse 3.2 (via ubuntu)
  * update site: http://vimplugin.sf.net/update
  * install and restart eclipse
  * new project, new test.txt, open with vim

Please try everything again from a completely new account on your
machine. If you get it working, please tell me about the problem: If
it's something we can do better we will ...

[vimplugin-devel] Unable to see vimplugin in Preferences

I am new to Eclipse and old timer on vim. As old habits die hard, I am=20
simply unable to use the standard editor in Eclipse for programming.=20
After some searching found vimplugin and hence really want to give it a=20
try. However I am stuck in install :(.

I did the normal procedure as mentioned in the install readme and it=20
went well. However I am unable to see "VimPlugin" in left pane in=20
"Preferences".  Also "Help->About eclipse platform->Plug-in details"=20
does not show any trace of vimplugin. However upon some verficiation,=20
VimPlugin files are present in the eclipse folder. The path is as follows=

eclipse/plugins/org.vimplugin.plugin_0.3.1.jar

I am using CDT-swt based build available from download page of the=20

It has 

1) standardized the build process
2) huge repositories of external libs (like jakarta commons, jee and the like)

You have to use the standard directory layout and _declare_ a "project object model" (pom.xml) that contains information about:

  * SCM (CVS, SVN)
  * Dependencies
  * developers
  * deployment locations
  * etc.

And maven performs the standard build-process when launching goals (targets) like:

  * compile
  * deploy
  * javadoc
  * test

Given a good pom, it really works out of the box ...

Think about of how much standard code is in your build.xml, wouldn't a generic solution (one that is valid for all other projects too) be much better than build.xmls that are 90% similar to each other?

But we are getting too OT, I will look at it when I have time :-/

Thanks. I thought about trying to add some 'launch eclipse' target but 
didn't think the effort would be worth it. You can launch Eclipse 
without too much effort though from Java so if anyone wants to debug 
Eclipse with only one instance running this would be the way about it I 
think.

Never used maven. Its exact purpose always confused me. Has one of those 
websites that has a lot of information of which doesn't make sense 
unless your familiar with the product or a similar one. What advatage 
would maven provide over ant though? Maven always seemed to be a 'build 
tool + more' to me and I'm not sure if we need the + more?

I have started to rework the completely outdated webpages:

  * moved to http://vimplugin.org
  * switched wiki implementation to dokuwiki 
    (see http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:dokuwiki )

The old spammed and useless pages are still available under 
http://vimplugin.sourceforge.net/wiki/pmwiki.php

New features: 

  * no more spam
  * better to maintain
  * registration for anyone with a valid email adress
  * nice rss feeds, page subscription etc
  * possible to extend with a lot of plugins
    (see http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:plugins )

It's still under heavy construction, but since it's a wiki, You can 
help :-) So go register and contribute ...

I don't have enough time debugging this problem so I just simply
report this to you.  I hope you can find out what was happening.  I'll
come back to join your work later as soon as possible.

2. Still open empty new tabs when double click a file inside Eclipse.

Sadly, I found that the issue I reported to eeedit still exists in the
latest version of vimplugin.  It still opens a new empty tab when I
double click a file inside Eclipse.  Fortunately, the menu item "Open
in new Vim" really works properly.  Although a bit too slow to use
because it needs to start multiple instances of GVim.

I'm thinking that is it possible to open all files in one tab inside
Eclipse?  In another word, is it possible to tell Eclipse not to open
a new tab but re-use the existed tab when we try to open other file?
If this is possible, I think it'll also be easy to tell GVim to switch
to the corresponding buffer when we click opened files in the files
view.

3. Lacking of command line tool chain supports.

My Linux box only has 504 MB RAM.  So starting two instances of
Eclipse is nearly impossible for me.  Personally I'd like to have a
command line interface building system rather than compiling the
project inside Eclipse every time.

And, Eclipse always put the compiled files inside the directory "bin",
so in order to make the plugin work, I have to manually move the
compiled result out of bin to its parent directory.  I think such work
should be done by the build system, no matter it's command line based
or IDE.

Any way, it's a great thing that we two projects can be merged into
one.  I'm looking forward to join you soon.  Bless my current work.

Okay sure, we may just need to not used ProcessBuilder then, launch vim in a
more manual way passing paramaters ourselves. Otherwise to distinguish
spaces we will need to look for quotation marks in the string and split on
them.

You could check out my branch - it actually compiles ;-)  as it allready=20
containts formic and the classpath has been fixed with the current version=
=20
numbers.

Of course I welcome improvements. For example there are .jar files checked=

in - but for each jar removed from the repository we should have note on th=

ProcessBuilder passed every arg as _one_ arg to the command. thus an arg 
"-u
~/.vprc" didn't work, beacuse of the space. That's why I splitted 
everything
up. And you are right, a file that contains spaces wont work that way.

But how can we distinguish space (a) from space (b) ??

I tell you what: Since you said it's a generally good idea, I'll commit

NPE and eclipse hanging probably result from a wrong path to the vim
executable.

Embedding only works under Linux. 

(For windows it's fixed in the repository, but it would need vim >=
7.1.091)

describe what changes I think should be made.

1. The default value should be blank.
2. I think the title should be: "Additional Vim Parameters"  as opposed to

Also, I think we should probably provide a tooltip for this option since
it's hard to come up with a clear short name that leaves no doubt in the
users mind as to what it's for. The problem is that I couldn't find any way
to use tooltips with FieldEditor subclasses. The only way I could find to
use tooltips involved having to use a PreferencePage as opposed to a
FieldEditorPreferencePage and using standard SWT widgets such as a Button. I
tried mixing a Button widget in with the FieldEditor widgets, but it caused
some layout problems.

Note: the ant scripts for building eclim are not setup to run on windows.

Before building eclipse you will need to:
  - set the environment variable ECLIPSE_HOME which points to your
eclipse install
  - make sure you install the required eclipse features
    - wst (2.0.x)
    - pdt  (1.0.0 final)

Also note that the eclim build files assume that your vimfiles
directory is located at ~/.vim

Once your environment is setup you should then just need to run '$
ant' from the top level directory of the eclim code base.  From there,
starting and stopping eclim is the same as if you had installed it via
the installer.

It's been a while since I've setup a fresh development environment for
eclim, so it's possible there is something I'm missing, but hopefully
that should be it.

As for formic, that is only needed if you plan on building the
installer (apache forrest would be needed as well).
