[vimplugin-devel] eclipse hang when opening file associated with plugin

Using vimplugin 0.3.1 on debian linux with eclipse 3.3.2, I'm getting
a hang when I try to open a java file which I've associated with the
plugin, the only output is:

$ eclipse
Trying to start vim
Server started and listening
Started vim




gvim starts fine on its own. I'm not really sure what the
password/port stuff is for in the prefs so I left as default.
Basically eclipse just hangs forever....

Actually it's a pretty simple bugfix around a confusion in the use of command 
line parameter (-socketid vs. -windowid). Anybody could have done it - it 
just got forgotten.

I also changed to info texts to reflect the fact that embedding works with Vim 
7.1 and Windows.

All it now need is a deployment...

Can you give some more details about the fixes. I read some previous
mails talking about problems running vimplugin on windows, but not
able to reply because of some problems. Basically, for successfully
running the vimplugin on windows, you need to have patched gvim [if
you are using older gvim] or latest release. As a part of our gsoc
idea, we did some modifications on vim side also. vimplugin can embed
gvim window inside the eclipse editor window.

I made a few Windows related fixes and they tested ok. Only I can't manage to 
create a new deployment :-(. Could any of you pick up where I left?

BTW: I suggest we try to create an "achieved site" as well - for those who are 
stuck behind a firewall / proxy.

Vimplugin will work on Window and a native Vim 7.1 - provided you use the 
current version from the subversion archive.

I guess it is time to prepare a new release...

Does the .log file have anything useful in it?  It should be in your
workspace/.metadata directory.

I run the plugin on XP with Eclipse 3.3.1 (as part of IBM's RSA
environment).  I installed the plugin in February, and remember having
similar problems, but it didn't take long to fix.  The problem is that I
wasn't aware at the time it was such a common problem, so I don't really
remember what I did specifically.  I do not use Cygwin at all.  I'm not
100% sure, but I think I had to set the default behaviour to loading it in
an external application (gvim for windows) instead of trying to do it
internally.  The plugin provides "Vim" and "Vim (new window)". One thing I
do remember confusing me at first was the fact that the editor won't be
embedded in Eclipse, but instead launches an external gvim application with
the selected file.

and path: C:\Program Files\Vim\vim71\gvim.exe

That  may not be much help, but I'll read through and try to job my memory.

I also found another plugin that actually provides vim functionality inside
most of the default editors.  This allows for using the good stuff of both
vim and the IDE at the same time, though it is no free (about $20 US).

separately?) and other pages I've seen that say it uses a Netbeans protocol
that requires a special vim build.

Remaining questions: Can the plugin run gvim? (when I changed the
preference to point to it, it would launch, but as an indepenent app).

the cygwin version doesn't appear to like my existing _vimrc file
(probably due to it's non-gui nature). However, I would like to change
the default color scheme, but am having a few problems. Can someone
point me toward a list of available colors (bg and fg) with the
non-gui vim? I have tried a number of them that are listed in the vim
help, but they are either ignored or garishly wrong.

Where can I put my eclipse based _vimrc file? Is that in /usr/share/vim?

Also, when I attempt to edit a file (*.c), vim is not the default
editor (even though it is so mapped), but must use the 'edit with'
option. Is this a bug, or pilot error?

When I attempt to open another file (with the first still open), I get
a black unresponsive window where I would expect to see the source of
the second file. Bug or pilot error?

vim, instead of keeping it in the standard eclipse window. is this a
problem with the plugin on windows or is this a problem with the way
i've set it up.

Dear Vimplugin list,

I have seen in the archives and on the forum several posts on the
subject of having vimplugin work in eclipse on Windows XP. I think I
must have read most if not all of them. I still have some confusion as
to whether I should be expecting it to work and if so, how to get it
to do so.

I give example of such posts below.

This is what I understand so far:
- that it should be possible to get vimplugin to work on Windows XP if
you have cygwin installed and refer to <cygwin-root>/bin/vim.exe as
your version of Vim
- that I am not the only one to experience Eclipse hanging when I try this
- that those people who have got vimplugin to work on windows have
(magically) not experienced this hanging, or at least not had to solve
it - or they didn't post what they did to solve it.
- I see several posts on this subject, including my own, with no real
answer on this.

Does anyone have any definitive knowledge or advice they could share
regarding how to setup vimplugin on a Windows XP environment?

I don't want to be a pain, but I'm keen to have such a valuable tool
at my disposal, and am quite frustrated that I have been unable to get
it to work.

In other words, is Vimplugin for Linux only, or not?

FYI, I think Eclipse on Windows grabs whichever javaw.exe
it finds in the directories listed in the PATH environment variable.
(AFAIK it does not use the JAVA_HOME variable.)
You may also specify the java executable directly by doing

eclipse.exe -vm C:\jdk1.5.0_14\jre\bin\javaw.exe

For your interest, I think Eclipse on Windows grabs whichever javaw.exe
it finds in the directories listed in the PATH environment variable.
AFAIK it does not use the JAVA_HOME variable, which you might think.
You may also specify the java executable directly by doing

eclipse.exe -vm C:\jdk1.5.0_14\jre\bin\javaw.exe

Is this requirement noted in the documentation? It wasn't obvious to me.

We require java 1.5, you use 1.4.2.

Install a newer java runtime, perhaps that will do it.

What version of java is installed? And more important: what java does
eclipse use?

Perhaps you could send the output of "Help->About
Eclipse->Configuration Details" (the 50 topmost lines suffice).

You can have it "inside eclipse", but you won't be able to use the
eclipse features. Thats on the todo list ...

For now its quite usable to edit other stuff like xml, html, csv or
similar but for java development, i would still use the eclipse-editor.

[vimplugin-devel] vimplugin in windows eclipse

I have installed vimplugin on my XP Workstation. The gvim window opens
outside of eclipse not in the eclipse window.

this really defeats the purpose of using vim in eclipse because you
don't get the eclipse functionality.  Is there a way 

to get gvim to be part of eclipse?

So long it is correct. Under 'plugins' there can be directories or jar
files. feature.xml just points to these.

I just tried with a clean Eclipse v.3.1.2. Only the Eclipse updates were
installed. I noticed that after the installation of the Vim plugin:

1. there was a directory under the 'features' directory with a single .xml
file in it.
2. there was a .jar file under the 'plugins' directory bu there was not a
Vim plugin directory.

Still no entries in the 'Preferences' dialog for the Vim plugin.

Is this the expected behavior?

It should work with 3.2 or 3.3. One issue can be if you have a lot of
other plugins installed. I remember for me in 3.3 our plugin worked
with the default install but the svn plugin would cause problems.

Is there any work being done to provide the Vim plugin for Eclipse v.3.x?
This is the only version currently provided on the Eclipse website. The
plugin that is available does not work with this Eclipse version. The
install goes fine but there are no entries in the Preferences dialog to
configure the Vim plugin.
