Hi, I posted to the discussion forum, but haven't recieved a reply. I can't get vimplugin to install. Also, is vimplugin still under active development? Vim and Eclipse integration is a really important goal, IMHO. Here is the message I get from Eclipse: Cannot complete the request. See the details. Cannot find a solution where both Match[requiredCapability: org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.swt/[3.4.0.v3448f,3.4.0.v3448f]] and Match[requiredCapability: org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.swt/[3.4.1.v3449c,3.4.1.v3449c]] can be satisfied. My system runs Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit i386. I have Eclipse 3.2, installed from the Ubuntu repositories. I installed Vimeclipse following the directions at http://vimplugin.org/installation. I associated *.py files with Vim following the directions. When I open a Python file, however, Eclipse hangs. At the console I get the following messages. $ eclipse searching for compatible vm... testing /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj...found Trying to start vim Started vim Waiting to connect to vim server… Waiting to connect to vim server… Waiting to connect to vim server… Server started and listening Waiting to connect to vim server… Waiting to connect to vim server… Waiting to connect to vim server… Waiting to connect to vim server… I did some further digging via ps. It seems that Vimeclipse is starting the server on port 3220, but the default is port 3219. This means, I think, that Vimeclipse is starting the server on a different port than it is trying to listen to one on. Can anyone confirm this, and possibly provide a fix for this bug? Thanks, Chris |

Thanks, Sebastian. I'll keep an eye out for the new release. Am I right in assuming that these mappings happen AFTER vimrc is loaded? If they could be set before vimrc, it would be trivial to unset any key bindings there. Additionally, it makes sense to only map keys that have bindings in Eclipse. Is there a way to poll Eclipse for its current key bindings during vimplugin startup? Brad P.S. Bad news first, I think you cannot disable it easily. Good news, I remember the background now: Some hard-coded function in vimplugin "registers" some hotkeys with vim at startup. Then, vim fires specific events once these keys are pressed. These events are caught in turn by vimplugin to perform eclipse actions. For <C-B>: when you turn off "automatic build" in eclipse, pressing <C-B> inside vim will build the project. In the current trunk version this is configurable: i.e. map any key to any eclipse action. It is not very stable by now, but perhaps you want to have a look at it. I will make a new release with that soon (ca. two weeks). Sebastian. |

There's not much in the way of documentation that I can find, but it appears that any special keys mapped in the IDE (Ctrl-B to build, for example) are declared to vimplugin which implements them as an key mapping. ":map" in vimplugin shows this: n <C-B> :nbkey C-B That doesn't show up in my standalone vim and any <C-B> mappings I do in my vimrc are overridden in the plugin. > It seems that no "Ctrl" key-mapping arrives at vim, so that's probably > not the course. Hey all, Is there a way to disable a nbkey mapping in a vimrc? Ctrl-B isn't working and I see that a netbeans key is being mapped, but I can't figure out a way to keep the mapping from taking place. >From what I've gathered, nbkeys are mapped based on keyboard shortcuts in Eclipse (Prefs->General->Keys). I've disabled all Ctrl-B binding there, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. And since vimplugin is resetting the cursor to 1,1 with every window switch, I need my Ctrl-B! Any help is appreciate. -Brad |

Hi Dave, The code base I am working in ( 1.5 million lines) is a mixture of C and C++, and pre ISO C++ at that. I have become pretty good at intermixing C and C++ in an OOP manner. I originally learned OOP in the mid '80s, with Smalltalk. This was on an IBM mainframe after hours at work, but at home, all I had was Pascal and C ( on OS/2 :) ) So I learned to do OOP by using structs and pointers to functions and a lot of programming rigor. Hell, these days, even my personal ksh scripts are usually at least OOD. Though this stuff is not for novices and even most experienced programmers have trouble wrapping their minds around it. And don't worry, I never get that esoteric in team coding :) Most C with C++ projects I have seen, are written by those who think that OOP requires an OOP language. The result is procedural OOP or POOP for short. On top of that, C++ just plain encourages POOP. The problem is that for some things, the standard C libraries are superior to the C++ replacements. And in many ways the STL is a flawed design ( product of a politically influenced committee, as was the flawed C Standard Library. Thats life.). The trick is to wrap the C stuff up in an OOP manner. Hacks should not be necessary. All it really involves is developing a programmatic idiom for the C and a lot of programming rigor to stick with that idiom. Its kinda like driving without street signs and markings. Speaking of rigor, the problem with C++ is that it too requires a lot of rigor to not end up with a pile of POOP. If a method has more then five lines, its probably a piece of POOP. My first rule of architecture is: If one needs to jump through hoops to implement something, the Architecture is flawed. The second is: If a hack is needed, the Architecture is flawed. My first principle is: Flawed architecture is usually the result of either functionality in the wrong spot or *intermixed programming paradigms*. As you are a new man on the team, you might not have much say in architectural decisions. But if and when you do, push for isolating the C from the C++ and push for mucking out the C++. Or better yet push for abandoning C++ all together ( have you looked at Objective C?) thx bob P.S. Sorry for getting so wordy. You probably know most of this stuff already. But I've been under my truck all day and I think my mind has gone into thermal shutdown! BTW, I'm putting a Weber 390 on a water heated intake so as long as I stay mellow, my mileage should be reasonable. A well tuned straight 6 can be quit efficient ( I hope :l ) ____________________________________________________________ Boost your productivity with new office software. Sounds great, except the corporate world stuff. I discovered the true horror of C++ recently when I started a new job in which we are using libraries written in a mixture of c and c++. C++ is bad enough but when having to apply all these little hacks to use c libraries, arghh! Oh and your vehicle sounds impressively scary and expensive to run with current fuel prices. Hi Dave, I kinda figured that development was going slow when I did not get a response right away. I assumed that most of you guys were probably students more worried about the new school year starting, then working on a hobby. That in a way, is actually somewhat helpful; It gives me some time to get a feel for the code without trying to assimilate a quickly moving target. As I said, I really will not be able to devote many execution threads to this project until October. The project that I am currently working on, will be the last one I do for $$ that I also put my heart into. ( not that C should have ever been used for anything other then rigorously designed low level stuff it was intended for, yikes!) thx bob P.S. Hi Robert, Great to hear from you and sorry for the slow reply, we would love more people of course. To be honest though the project isn't being developed very actively. I myself don't have any time at the moment as I am working full time and going to university part time. So if you do decide to contribute, which would be great, you would be the primary developer. We would still be able to offer any assistance you required of course. Java isn't a complicated language so you should be fine, the main difficulty with most languages is if you are also learning a new paradigm as well but this doesn't apply to you. The code base isn't that large, so I can't really suggest you focus on a particular area, shouldn't take long to browse over all of it. The other important area to look into is Vim's netbean protocol (so in vim :he netbeans). Read that thoroughly as it explains how we are communicating between vim and eclipse. 2008/8/25 zee...@ne... <zee...@ne...>: > Hi, > > My name is Robert Barror. I am a software architect. I would also like to contribute my time to the community. I understand that you guys could use more developers. I am currently quite tied up with contract work, but I should be free to devote time to a software project starting in October. I would be more then happy to give 10-15 hours a week assisting were ever I can. I feel that if I am going to put my heart into something, it is better for it to be something everyone can benefit from. > > I am not to particularly picky about the type of software I am developing as long as it is challenging and targets posix like platforms :) I have been programing since 1974. I have learned a lot of languages. But I have never written any Java code (though I learned it well enough to become a Sun certified Java developer). I have been using Python (my current fav language) which has a similar object model, so I should be able to learn to think in Java quickly. I am well versed in C and C++. > > Please let me know if I can help, and if so, what I should be studying to get up to speed. BTW, I have been using VIM for about 10 years. I have lost count of the number of time I have compiled it for HP-UX. It is one of my MUST-HAVE applications. I have messed with Eclipse a little, but without VI, I find it too limited for real work. I have just downloaded eclim and will be playing with it sometime this week, if I get the time. > > thx, bob > > > ____________________________________________________________ > Be a professional.
