Expecting users to know which mode a map should be in is wrong.
It's not "viking's philosophy" not to select the right mode automatically.
It's just the fact that we haven't been able to fix the problem yet.

I usually have 4 map layers in a file. Terraserver topo's, aerials and then Google maps, and sat. images. Using the keyboard shortcuts lets me quickly switch between view modes.  It works fine for me.
