I know git pretty well - but to monitor changes I'd either have to use the console manually, or setup a cronjob to do so. A svn commit mail is a much more easy way to see what's happening as soon as the commit was made - because I don't have to pull changes, I get notified as soon as they happen. But the git's RSS feed works well enough for me - I don't care if logs popup in my feed reader or in my mail reader. The only thing I find mail archives better for is if you want to give a comment to a commit - you can just reply to the message (if the ML is setup well, you have the -devel list in reply-to) and add your comments to the lines.
