If you can - run Viking with verbosity and/or debugging turned on - it might reveal in more detail what is going on.
For Linux like systems, try running from the command line:
viking -Vd
For the "Unable to save tile" message - it implies there is some problem with writing a temporary file. It may help to remove any existing "*.tmp" files in the directory tree of the map cache directory for this Map Layer or this directory is read only.
By default the map cache directory for Bing Aerials should be /home/<username>/.viking-maps/Bing Aerial</username>
