Emulated RS232 separate settings for in/out

Hello,
in physical c64s and VIC20s it is very simple to put two units into connection by building a simple cross-over cable and plug it into the RS232.
In emulator this turns out to be impossible just because the emulated RS232 gets both inputs and outputs to the same host:port
Would it be possible to have an option to split input and output on two different host:port settings, so that it is possible to cross-connect two emulators?
This would make possible to develop new distributed software, and easily use two emulated VICs or c54 to chat across a network.
this is already possible using socat, see https://vice-emu.pokefinder.org/index.php/RS232#connect_two_VICE_instances_on_the_same_host
