Oh, I see now.  It has ``X_SOCKET *'' in all the prototypes.  How
would you get access to the stats of a given fd given a fd?  Your
reason (3), indeed, would be a good reason to just use integer
descriptors in general, in VFER or anywhere else.

This is what implementation experience is supposed to be about.
