I installed Veracrypt 1.25.9 (64-bit) on Windows 11. I created an encrypted container on a USB drive. After mounting the volume, I copied a text file into the volume and opened the file with Notepad. Whenever I dismounted the volume, the volume was dismounted and the drive was removed from File Explorer. I checked and unchecked the Preferences setting 'Force auto-dismount even if volume contains open files or directories' and also quit and restarted Veracrypt, verifying that the setting was either checked or unchecked. After changing the file, I mounted the volume and was able to save the updated file.

I installed veracrypt-1.25.9-Ubuntu-20.04-amd64.deb on Linux Mint 20. I mounted the USB drive, opened the file with xed, and tried to dismount the volume. I got a pop-up window with "umount: /media/veracrypt1: target is busy." When I closed the file and tried to dismount the volume, I still got the same pop-up window. When I closed xed, I was able to dismount the volume. Also, I couldn't seem to find the 'Force auto-dismount even if volume contains open files or directories' setting in the Linux version.

It seems like the Windows version should not dismount the volume while the file is open and the setting is unchecked. Could someone tell me if I've misunderstood that setting, or, am doing something wrong?

Also, should this setting be in the Linux GUI version?

I suspect this is likely due to one of two things, both resulting in Notepad simply not having a lock on the file: either it's holding the file's contents in memory or you only opened the file but didn't make any changes. I'm fairly certain VC will normally warn you if you're trying to close a container while a file is open/locked. Try either making a change to the file first or, if that doesn't work, try using a different editor or opening other file types, e.g. Word/Excel/videos/etc.
