after using TrueCrypt for many years I decided to switch to VeraCrypt - only to fail right away with creating a volume (encrypting a new external drive).
I get the same error as in https://sourceforge.net/p/veracrypt/discussion/technical/thread/c8dcb3d3f3/ . the The solution there was "Adding an additional drive to replace the original and allowing VeraCrypt to format it (without initializing within windows etc) resolved this issue.", but I don't have an additional drive and don't understand what exactly "without initializing within windows etc" means.
I've tried it as administrator too, same error. Windows 10 here.
Any help is welcome!

Forum user Joao posted that the issue on his Windows 10 was due to Windows Defender Ransomware protection was enabled.

What a coincidence! Yes, that's it! Weird that Windows didn't show a warning for the blocked access - it did in the past. Thanks for the pointer. :)
