I have been a user of true crypt for a long time with my windows 7 HP pavilion.
before I can do anything I have to log in with my truecrypt password. I like it.
Now I have an ultra sandisk 128GB 3 I reformatted and want to do same as I do with my laptop except I want to make it a traveler USB.
Meaning I insert ultra USB into my desktop USB or my next newer laptop andhave to enter a password to see files or added files.
I have on my ultra 10 folders from my laptop using 106GB plus 16GB free. disk size is 128
How do I make a creat a password that must be entered before I can see what is these files on my sandisk or any other folders I may add on this computer or my next computer a windows 10?
and please make it simple. From what I see it should be simple.
Thanks

Paul,
I have 14 folders containing my backup stuff from my laptop plus 14 files of veracrypt stuff. total 99.6GB with 14GB free.
What I thought I could do is have to enter my Veracrypt password each time I wanted to see, add files or copy out files from sandisk to my laptop. Thiswould be same as I do on my laptop. I cannot do anything until I enter my Truecrypt password at start which then opens my Window 7 files and everything else I have on this computer.
Your last sentence above says "Just encrypt the whole USB then put your files on it". It took a long time to get those 99.6GB onto SanDisk, are you saying I have delete everything and then copy all 14 back again to encrypted sandisk.?
When I first used Truecrypt which was a long time ago, no way did I delete everything from this laptop and start over again.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

1st I also have a 128gb USB drive I have encrypted the whole thing it is a very slow process to transfer the files that is how they are at the moment.
1 -- you can encrypt the files on the usb stick without having to delete them and then put them back on but it will be slow. also the partition will have to be NTFS. Use "encrypt partition in place" option
2 -- You can encrypt the usb drive quickly using the option "quick format" only take a minute or so. (if the files are super sensative that is not recomended)
You do not have to delete them when you encrypt the usb it will just go over them.
You keep saying truecrypt are you using that or veracrypt?
What version?

Truecrypt is on my laptop. I have to enter my truecrypt password before I get to Windows 7 opening screen.
option 1 above . not sure I want partion if I have a choice NTFS. I would prefer AES.
option 2 above. Files are 6 day old copies of files on my hardware. It took like 3 hours copy them to sandisk.
option 3 above I don't have to delete them when I encrypt the usb it will just go over them. Does that mean it will take like 3 hours again?
Bottom line. if I do get veracrypt on my sandisk as in option 3 all my files will be encrypted after like 3 hours. Then later I insert sandisk into my usb port what will I see? Will I see something asking me to insert my password before I can see anything? Same as I do on my Laptop using Truecrypt? And can I guess once I see those files I can either copy them back and forth to my windows 7 or windows 10 when I get a new computer?
NTFS is the file system it, if you have a file over 4gb you probable have NTFS.
AES is a file encryption standard.
There is no option 3 (I will edit the 3 out)
I suggest you do nu 2 encrypt the whole usb
Then copy your files over.
If you not going to have any single files over 4gb in size leave the option as fat.
If you are going to have any single files over 4gb in size change the option to NTFS. (read the fields carefully as you create it and you will be okay)

So is what you are saying no way I can use veracrypt as I did with truecrypt on my laptop windows 7 with my sandisk and not have to copy files to sandisk.
what will laptop screen look like when I insert sandisk with encrypted files that I have sent over once again from my laptop. do you screen image or location?

You can use veracrypt the same way as before but you may be blocked from going any further if the present file system is fat. (it will bring up a message saying you can;t do it ) if so just do option 2
Both ways are going to be slow but option 2 will be quicker than what you want to do.

What do you mean by that?
You can put the portable version on it and it will work.
OR
Do you mean you tried to encrypt it so you could put some files on it?
Also
If it does not work What message are you getting?
Write down the first few steps so I can duplicate what you are doing.

1 - I have this old Lexar 16gb flash drive in my Windows 7 HP pavilion g6 64 bit laptop.
2- It shows as cryptor(G:) 14.9 available no files not folder. It is NTFS and default allocation size.
3 - on my laptop I go to veracrypt extraction options and pick G:\ and click extract.
4- I get a popup saying all files extract to G:\ I click on finish.
5 - I am taken to G:\crypter and pick veracrypt.exe
6 - a window opens and I Have choice for create volume, select file, select device, mount and automount. There is also tools to make a traveler.
Rather than going any further as I have more than a few times what do I do on this window?
Thanks
I would like to encrypt a portion so I can have some files I need a password and other portion where I don't.
This is only a Dummy test for me. should this work on Lexar I will do same on my sandisk 128gb 3.
Go to the usb create a new txt file call it Test.txt
Now to veracrypt
1st - Click on ( Create Volume )
2nd - Don't change anything click on -> next
3rd - Don't change anything click on -> next
4th - Select file navigate to the file Test.txt (it will ask if you want to overwrite it click YES) -> next
5th - You can leave this as default until you read about the options for encryption -> click next
6th - put in the size you want the container to be (there is a message below the box that tells you the maximum size it can be) LOOK at the sizes kb - mb - gb you may have to change that depending on what size you want. -> click next
7th - put in a password -> click next
8th - If you have no sensative files change the option to Quick Format move the mouse around till color line changes to green and goes far right -> click next
You have just made it
Use select file -> navigate to that file -> put in password and open it
Finished.

So now you don't want a portion that is unencrypted where you can keep files.
Look at these 2 option will it help?
There are 2 options both require you to open veracrypt to access the encrypted files.
1 - you can encrypt the whole USB.
2 - you can have an encrypted container on the USB + space for other files like veracrypt
Now you have option 2 , so open veracrypt
1 highlight a drive letter.
2 click on select file
3 navigate to the file Test.txt
4 click Mount -> put password in -> click Ok.
It will be available in Windows Explorer under the drive letter you chose.
Option 1 has nearly the same process to get to the files.
But with option 1 you have to put veracrypt on your computer you can't put it on the USB.
If you are using a very old usb it could be usb1 which is extremely slow.

Your post is a bit confusing, Have you looked at the help option?
Quote "Meaning I insert ultra USB into my desktop USB or my next newer laptop andhave to enter a password to see files or added files."
If you have veracrypt go to the top
Help -> User's guide
Left side, click on Search
Search -> Creating a New VeraCrypt Volume
Just encrypt the whole USB then put your files on it, you can then open it with any computer with vera crypt installed.
