I tried to do a full disk encryption on my Windows 10 system with an HDD drive and got the following warning/error messages (see attachments). I've never encountered such problems before, nor used veracrypt for full disk encryption previously - what are the consequences if I choose to let it overwrite unreadable sectors (I chose no and canceled the whole process)? Can I determine which data precisely will be lost, or what are those damaged sectors and so on? What are the third-party tools Veracrypt talks about? I did a generic check with standard tools like wmic diskdrive check model, status and got OKs. It's not possible Veracrypt has a problem and it's definitely my HDD, right (it's very old but works fine for me)? Would appreciate any help or even suggestions what to try.

Chose to write on the forum after all because the error/warning messages are too vague for me (I'm not really well-versed in hardware questions at all) and I want to know the consequences or in depth reasons for what can be wrong, so that I know where to look next.

On the third screenshot, it clearly states that there's a hardware issue with either your HDD or the cable connection. It's advisable to do further testing. Search the web for "HDD bad sector scanner" or similar.

You could try again and see, if the message pops up again at the same stage of progress. In such case, it would be very likely faulty hardware. To continue with in-place encryption can lead to data loss, as stated in the messages.

In any case, you should back up important data from this drive, if not done so before.
