Hi.
I have this problem:
On my 64bit Win 8.1 system I have a dedicated partition for data and documents. I have decided to encrypt this partition with Veracrypt. I formatted it and then used the Wizard to create an encrypted "non-system partition".
It went fine. At the end of the process I I mounted it to check. There was no problem at all.
I designated the volume as a favourite to be automatically mounted on Windows Logon and restarted the computer.
The dialogue appears, prompting me to enter the password, but then I have a problem.
Veracrypt takes its time to decide but then refuses to accept the password. It says, "Wrong password or no Veracrypt volume"
When I try again it doesn't even wait so much.
It displays a message for 1/10 of the second and then closes it without allowing me to read what it says. The volume cannot be mounted.
I also try to mount it manually. It does not want to mount.
Any ideas?
It might be useful to add that I have been using TrueCrypt in the same exact configuration with no problems.

This type of configuration works perfectly the same Windows 8.1, so there must be other explanations ( I use the same setup).
What parameters did you use? Any Symantec or Trend Micro Antivirus used?
Concerning the message that displays in 1/10 of seconds, I don't see where it could come from. The password checking takes more that this obviously...Is it possible to capture a video?

Hi,
Thanks for your quick response.
After a lot of repetitions, I can now say that the very quick message is almost certainly the normal message that Veracrypt would display when beginning the password checking.
So, the first time it checks the password "normally", only to report that the password is "wrong". The second time it doesn't even try to check. The dialogue closes almost immediately, no further message is displayed and the volume is not mounted.
I cannot see anything very special in this particular setup.
I don't use Symantec or Trend Micro antivirus. I do not use any special parameters.
I have two computers. The one with the problem is a laptop. The other, with quite similar software, is a desktop. I do not have the problem there.
Do you think it would be useful to try to capture a video?
I do not have a software for this. I would need to use a proper camera.

Thanks for the information. This is a puzzling situation...
Maybe you can a phone camera to capture the sequence? The idea is to try to have clues about what is happening.
Also, if you have time to do tests (for which I would be grateful), you can re-encrypt the partition using VeraCrypt with a simple password (no symbols and preferably a value that is invariant with regards to AZERTY/QWERTY, like "test") in order to verify if the issue is linked to the keyboard mapping on this laptop. You can later change the password to a stronger value before copying any sensitive data.
Another possible test is to encrypt the partition with TrueCrypt using the same parameters and then load it with VeraCrypt after rebooting in order to see if you have the issue.
Basically, we have two issues here: password not recognized and the dialog display issue. For the first, the simple password test can point us to the right direction.

Thanks again.
So, I did re-encrypt the partition with Veracrypt and a simple password ("test").
I designated the partition as favourite volume and then restarted. On restarting
the dialogue appeared, I put the password and nothing happened.
Two minutes later I opened the Veracrypt GUI to see if the volume was mounted, it was not.
I tried to mount it manually (by selecting the device etc) and it was not possible to mount it. As per my previous message, the dialogue disappeared immediately.
I tried more than once.

Second part of experiments.
I did create a TrueCrypt volume.
Tried to auto-mount is as VeraCrypt on logon, the same behaviour.
I even tried then to mount it with TrueCrypt (manually) and it said that the system is not configured to auto-mount volumes.
When I tried again to mount to TrueCrypt, it reported "Wrong password or not a truecrypt volume"...

Hi.
Sorry to ask again, but do we have any progress with the issues reported above?
Have you had the chance to look at the videos?
Is there any other experiment you would want me to do?
Thanks

Thank you for the videos and sorry for my late answer to your post, I was busy addressing other issues.
Concerning your case, a possible explanation is that your Windows is configured in such a way that AutoMount is disable. This is not the default setting of Windows and something has explicitly disabled it.
In order to try to solve this, just enable AutoMount under Windows : start a command prompt as an Administrator ("Run as an Administrator"). In this command prompt, type : diskpart. Then after diskpart has started, type : AUTOMOUNT ENABLE
Restart Windows and try again.

Thank you very much for this.
It seems that this was the root of the problem!
I followed your suggestion and the problem disappeared.
No idea why the AutoMount setting was disabled.
Thanks again!

I am writing to you as I am having a problem to access to the content of my pen drive which I protected with Vera Crypt software some months ago. I have never had probelms till today. I am following the usual procedure I tried even to move the pen drive from one USB port to the other..I tried to switch off and on the pc..but it doesn't work. The password is always the same. I have never changed it...So the password is not the problem indeed.
I don't understand what is wrong...It appears an error message saying: the password it is not correct or the object is not a vera crypt volume. ATTENTION the key blocks capital is active this could cause an incorrect inserting of the pw. Source: mount volume: 8299
I always used the key blocks capital on as the password is all in capital letters and numbers..and I have never had such a problem.
In the attachment some screen shots perhaps help you to understand better the nature of the problem.
Hello, sorry to disturb again..waiting for an help I tried to apply also the solution, suggested for this kind of problem, I found in the section troubleshooting of https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Troubleshooting.html
which is the following:
Problem:
VeraCrypt volume cannot be mounted; VeraCrypt reports "Incorrect password or not a VeraCrypt volume".
Possible Cause:
The volume header may have been damaged by a third-party application or malfunctioning hardware component.
Possible Solutions:
You can try to restore the volume header from the backup embedded in the volume by following these steps:
1) Run VeraCrypt
2) Click Select Device or Select File to select your volume.
3) Select Tools > Restore Volume Header.
..but unfortunatly, in my case, it didn't work...
Nobody able and available to help me?!

VeraCrypt is a hit or miss solution, like posted earlier in this thread, test it first with a simple configuration with no critical data that can be lost. If it works on a PARTICULAR machine without any problems for lets say 3 months of constant use, the by all means use it. If you keep getting problems and errors on a different machine that has the exact same hardware and installation, then don't use it on that machine. VeraCrypt is awesome, the best.......IF it works on a machine. See the program is well written, TOO well written.
note : linux users almost never have this problem, windows is just a crap O/S
The tiniest change in Windows, which unfortunately happens very frequently since windows updates and even the smallest changes to windows frequently screws with 3rd party apps and programs (including games), remember we're talking about microsoft here, they only care about THEIR operating systems and THEIR software, any 3rd party software isn't theirs so it's to their benefit if people using 3rd party software, paid or otherwise; are being screwed around as a result.
Two situations, there is no middle ground:
A. VeraCrypt works on your particular machine (server, PC, laptop) then CONGRATULATIONS, use it on that machine until it rusts and falls apart. Works perfectly on my Windows 10 Pro 64-bit PC in my room.
or
B. VeraCrypt doesn't work on your particular machine now matter how many times you come to this forum, or how many times you change the settings/versions and usage methods. Wake up me boy, your machine's windows O/S was cursed by Microf##k. If this is the case just give up, uninstall VeraCrypt and just use a more simple encryption solution where you use a encoded USB flashdrive/thumbdrive as a key (make several copies and put one in a safe. The case with my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit PC in the study.
this is no fault of the VeraCrypt team, this is merely the way things are. Trying to get something to work on a pc with a cursed windows installation is like trying to fight a tornado by farting. Fact is every installaton of a Windows O/S is unique even if you cloned an image to multiple machines of the same spec, eventually with just a little normal use the O/S makes random changes(especially during windows updates) that shapes that installation of windows forever, eventually it can become so screwed that everything works on the PC but VeraCrypt doesn't
Been in IT support for 20 years and finally one day had enough and went into a totally different line of work. Hours are better, less stress, lighter workload, more respect from co-workers, you are not seen as a disposible office supply item. I spent 20 years repeatedly having to fix other people's crap which is always trying to get their favourite junk to work on their brand new spiffy expensive laptop that they bought with daddy's credit card and if you can't fix it you got the technical director screaming at you (then it turns out even our department guru can't make it work). Best solution is, don't waste your time. If you can't fix it in half an hour then use something else and get rid of whatever is the problem (just use it on another machine where it works). If you're in IT support, save yourself and your financial future, look for a different line of work; slavery is slavery, even if your IQ is higher than that of your employers.
