    Hey Veracrypt nation,

I am a new user who's setting up a NAS system and I am interested in using VeraCrypt to encrypt the NAS files. It is a DROBO system, so it does not support full-disk encryption. So I will be using AES encrypted file containers to make an 8 TB encrypted volume. The estimated time for this operation is 4 days.

Does this length sound appropriate to you for encrypting a new file container? There is no data on the disk, so it should not have to format all 8 TB before creating the container.

    Thanks!!

    R

This is RAID 5 isn't it? What would happen if one disk fails and you will have to replace it?

That time seems a little high, but it depends on a number a factors. The type of encryption you are using can slow it down, but if you are doing straight AES, that shouldn't influence it much. Your CPU can slow it down, since your CPU is using algorithms to create the data being transmitted to fill the volume space.

Remember, when you create an encrypted container, VC writes random data to fill the entire space of the container. It does not matter if there is no data to overwrite, that is simply how VC file containers work.

I have several times created and managed multi-terabyte volumes on a NAS. I find the creation time to be about 2-2.5 hours per TB, and it seems that the limiting factor is my gigabit ethernet connection, as I can monitor the network traffic and see VC sending aroung 900 Mbps.

The first time a made a 2TB container on a NAS, I was connected over a 100 meg switch, so my network speed topped out around around 95 Mbps, and 2TB took over 50 hours.
