Windows 10
Ryzen 9 5900X
ASUS Pro Art B550 Mainboard (Thunderbolt 4 onboard)
LaCie 6big 60TB 6-Bay (Thunderbolt 3)
RAID 5
The LaCie RAID behaves "normal" when connected via USB.
-> 250-290MB/s read and write
-> Veracrypt encryption reduces speed only marginally
When connected via Thunderbolt (without encyption) the speeds are pretty good: 600-1000MB/s.
But when Veracrypt is used the write speed slows down to ~100MB/s.
Using Veracrypt via container or partition doesn't make a difference.
Using NTFS or exFAT or using different algorithms doesn't make a difference.
-> its always around 100MB/s
The speeds were tested by copying large video files.
-> Interestingly the speed drop isn't measurable using CrystalDiskMark.
(I also tried Bitlocker: the speed drop is even worse.)
Is there a known bug combining Veracrypt + Thunderbolt or Veracrypt + RAID ?
Thanks a lot in advance!

I contacted the LaCie support already - Unfortunately, so far only very general, unhelpful tips from their side. (They don't really care about third party software)
-> But i will keep trying.
The LaCie device runs the latest official firmware.
PC Bios is up-to-date too.

Interestingly when i encrypt the volume or create a new container the write speed via THUNDERBOLT is petty good ~800-1000MB/s.
(More or less "normal" THUNDERBOLT speeds)
But writing into that container or volume, write speed hits a wall at ~100MB/s
(Copying a file...)

Maybe the RAID controller has issues deriving recovery data from (pseudo) random data, as this is happening to VC as well as Bitlocker. Just a thought, but nevertheless I'm out of ideas, too.

Known issue.

Thanks a lot for the fast reply!
The Lacie RAID is not using SSDs.
There are normal HDDs inside.
-> I think, my problem is not this "known issue".
The interesting thing is that USB is 2.5x faster than THUNDERBOLT with Veracrypt.
(It should be the other way around.)
have you had a look at your PC's CPU usage? Maybe there is a bottleneck when using Thunderbolt and encryption at the same time?
The RAID stuff is done by your external device. So this shouldn't be the issue.
You mentioned that you have speed issues with Bitlocker as well. This would lead to the assumption that it's not a VC issue per se.

Thanks for your reply!
CPU usage is pretty low - no bottleneck there.
Yes Bitlocker is almost unusable slow (~15MB/s) -> via USB and THUNDERBOLT.
(RAID + encryption seems to be tricky)
But the LaCie system seems to work fine via USB.
It would be great if there's a fix to get it running via THUNDERBOLT too.
(with appropriate speeds)
I would contact LaCie support due to you are experiencing performance issues using VeraCrypt or when you use MS BitLocker.
Maybe there is a firmware update that needs to be applied to the LaCie device.
Another thing I would check is to make sure my PC BIOS is up-to-date from ASUS for your exact model.
Thanks!

Are the drivers up-to-date for LaCie, USB and Thunderbolt?
Thanks!
Drivers should be up-to-date too.
If you are relying on Microsoft Updates to keep your drivers current, you may not have the latest drivers for your devices.
Check with LaCie support site to see if they have Windows 10 drivers for your device.
On my PC, Windows Update has "missed" current or new drivers released by third party vendors.

Thanks for your reply!
Everything should be up-to-date.
I checked ASUS and LaCie support site.
-> if it's not hidden somewhere in particular, it shoud updated.

Sorry. I am out of ideas as to my VeraCrypt and BitLocker are having performance problems on your system.
Thanks anyway!
