My computer is running Windows 10 Home x64 and has VeraCrypt installed not portable. I encrypted my system partition only, not full disk encryption. My SSD has other partitions which I wanted to mount automatically when I boot Windows. I encrypted the other partitions with the same algorithm, password and PIM as the system drive.
I mounted the other partitions and tried to select Favorites >>> Add Mounted Volume to System Favorites. VeraCrypt gave me the error message that it failed to obtain Administrator privileges.
VeraCrypt runs without administrator privileges by default, but it escalates privileges automatically when creating an encrypted partition.
I fixed my error by finding VeraCrypt in the start menu and running it as an administrator, even though there was already an instance of VeraCrypt running. Once I did that I could designate System Favorite Volumes.
For future releases of VeraCrypt, it would be good if the program could elevate privileges in that situation like it does when encrypting a partition. At least it would be good to change the error message to tell the user how to fix it.
