If the volume mounts, try recovering as much data as you can before things go south. One of those recovery softwares may help: Recuva: https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva, TestDisk: https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download, DiskGenius and a few others.

TestDisk does have a GUI version (QPhotoRec), in case you find the command line one daunting (which is likely the first time -- Familiarization takes time).

Again, as has been beaten to death umpteen times, a backup plan is an absolute must. At least, you only have to fret over what's already not synced. Otherwise, if the primary volume is inaccessible for any unforeseen reasons you may as well kiss goodbye to all your precious data. I personally have little/nothing that's indispensable and yet religiously stick to bare minimum backup strategy.

The data has been overwritten, and if it is an SSD, it cannot be recovered; Do not use txt and other formats in the future, it is easy to be opened by the editor.

There is no method to recover the files in the file container if you cannot mount the file container in VeraCrypt or you do not have a recent backup of the file container.

You can try mounting the file container in VeraCrypt using the optional mount option of the embedded backup header.

If you can mount the file container in VeraCrypt, you can try to recover data within the mounted VeraCrypt volume using data recovery software. I would make a copy of the dismounted file container and use the copy of the file container for data recovery attempts.

Users on the VeraCrypt forum have had good results with paid edition of EaseUS Data Recovery and R-Studio. Other data recovery software are GetDataBack, File Scavenger, Photorec and TestDisk.

    Didn't mean to disparage/insult. I'm a newbie myself...Apologies anyway.

Something like this with a little more detail should/could go into the documentation. At least, that may stop inexperienced users who Do/Should spend time reading the documentation from resorting to irreversible recovery actions out of desperation. :)

VeraCrypt already has a section called How to Back Up Securely and there are many posts on the VeraCrypt forum where users have no backups of their irreplaceable data when something happens to their VeraCrypt volume(s).

In my opinion, it is not feasible to write any kind of recovery procedures due to the steps to perform the recovery depend on what caused the failure or damage to the VeraCrypt encrypted disk, partition or file container. Also, there is no guarantee of a successful recovery.

Always have frequent backups of your data due to possible hardware failure, software issues or user error which can cause loss of access to either unencrypted drive or an encrypted disk, partition or file container.

    Fair enough.

It's just that some of the users refuse to take responsibility of something only they have control over.
