Hello Velon and welcome aboard! If you want to start poking around under the hood, check these out: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/Development - The source code documentation is a bit lacking though http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/HowTo:Contribute#For_Programmers - General contuibutor info http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/users/ace123/doxygen_graphs/ - inheritance charts I'm not a programmer so I can't be more specific, but I know my way around the data set pretty well if you have any questions about that. hey i know it maybe gets old but hell i wont mind to be praised over and over... vega strike is great, from all games i ever played this one has probably the most personallity out there, not only a huge universe and a non liniar gameplay but also interesting realistic story and background :) now about me, i want to join the development team, im new to programming but i learc fast, plus nobody forces you to put my code in the tree if it isnt good :P i know basic c and python, and handle cpp very well (i think and hope :)) and love math very much (when i get my hands on it, and soon i will in the university) i would hope to contribute my code and my ideas to the project, while its not my favorite area i think im quite good at UI. so thats where i would love to start. right now im here because i couldnt wait with the joining, although i dont want to start coding yet (need to finish some stuff first not that much tough) for now i would love to get some info, share some of my ideas and look at the code from time to time. i wont bother you all with too much questions for now so here i go with two: 1) im new to development especailly being part of an open source project, can someone please tell me about how much developers vega strike has? so i can get a percpective of how much i can contribute (aproximetly of course) 2) is there a guide or guidlines somewhere for the structure of the code? i mean how to comment how clean readable code should look like etc.. (when i said how to comment i meant where to [ut comments so they will be usefull and not distracting) |

Good thing I haven't been looking at the Vegastrike code. It hurts to read code that looks like that. I can guarantee you that Bjarne Stroustrup never intended C++ to be mangled in such a fashion. |

And now a patch that actually compiles. I left out a curly brace in the delete loop. Sorry about that. I'm new and probably out of line asking questions (and submitting patches) like this--but, here goes: universe.cpp:126-129 cockpit.push_back(NULL); int temp = cockpit.size(); cockpit.back() = new GameCockpit ("",NULL,playerNames[i]); temp = cockpit.size(); Is there a purpose for appending to the cockpit vector this way? Why not just... cockpit.push_back( new GameCockpit("", NULL, playerNames[i])); And the Universe destructor (universe_generic.cpp:201) isn't freeing the those heap allocated Cockpit pointers correctly. Need to loop through and call delete on each pointer. Not doing this leaks memory. No need to clear the vectors themselves though.. their destructors will do that automatically. |

I'm starting uni again Monday, and I really want to get out of doing one of the compulsary units (I should have done it a few years ago but I kept putting it off). I actually have a choice of two units, but there's no way I can get past the other (I haven't done enough C to show anything). So here's the unit description: http://units.handbooks.uwa.edu.au/units/cits/cits2200 Now, keeping in mind I don't have to have done the exact course, anything on a similar technical level should be enough to get me through (even if it simply looks like it's on a similar level ;-) ). So my question is this: Given the major code works I've done on Vegastrike (though if you have any other ideas feel free to give them my way) ie the news system, the old conversation system that was quickly superseded by teh campaign system, the campaign editor, my xmesh exporter (and I think that's about it?) are there any suggestions on how I can present my case well? I'll need to present code too, so as a bonus you'll end up with proper documentation in those bits ;-) This is real important to me, as I really want to do another unit on computational fluid dynamics but can't really fit it in otherwise. If you can offer any advice, I'd really appreciate it. Dan |

Hey all, In response to the question raised in http:// vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=74800#74800 "How does the engine select which base you are at when you dock with a planet or ship? I want to override the generic base with a campaign specific base and/or create new planets and ships that are campaign specific" I'm fairly stumped. I know how we can make the base types depend on the campaign, easy enough. But how is each base type chosen? To add a new base type corresponding to an individual ship or planet, what do we do? I should have time in the next couple of days to try this out myself, but if anyone knows the answer, either reply to this email or the forum thread. Cheers Dan |

Hi there. I've heared there was a problem with persistent enemies and plot units, that would multiply upon saving/loading cycles. I know that was a bug with Privateer Remake 1.0 that got fixed a while ago, and I've heared Daniel fixed it, that it had something to do with the binary build. Now, my question is... what exactly was the problem? I have a few GUI/Gold-related changes to commit (with a new binary), and I wouldn't want to reintroduce the bug if it were a problem with compiler settings or things like that. KthxTWA ( oK, thanks, That Was All ;-) ) |

The main discussion happens on the forum: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/ We also have a Wiki: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/ This mailing list is intended for more specific discussion among the developers... and the forum is for more general discussion or for users to post stuff. Strange...I seem to be able to get to the mailing list archives from the "Mailing Lists" menu item on the project page. Here is a direct link to the archives: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=134 Unfortunately this includes all the spam... we had a huge spam problem over the past month until we finally closed off the list last week. Anyway, about your autopilot question, we now use something called SPEC instead of autopilot... SPEC is a velocity multiplier. It goes really high in space, and slows down around planets. It's a lot like autopilot in some ways but without the instant teleportation that makes gameplay awkward. Also, you shouldn't be getting "blank" planets... What version, OS and detail setting is this on? -Patrick Andrew McCracken wrote: > Hi, > > I've played vegastrike a bit, my main gripe is the cumbersome > transportation method, (apart from the blank planets...) > > I tried looking through the archives of this mailing list but they > didn't seem to work ("forum not found" or something) > > Is this where the main development discussion happens? > > What is the state of the autopilot system at present? > > Cheers, > > Andrew > |

What is the state of the autopilot system at present? Cheers, Andrew |
