I have uploaded a new iso for testing. I think it is complete enough for community testing. This includes all the changes M0E wanted as to grub and a few others. I would like a few others to try this before i do a general alpha release if possible. the iso is here: ftp://ftp-osl.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/Uelsk8s/test/VL6.0-SOHO-A1.9.14.iso If you find any problems that would prevent a community test please report with ideas to fix. Hello, Using VMWare 5.x, I've just tested the A1.9.14 iso install via GUI. Overall impressions of the installer is that it is looking much nicer - great job. However, I had a couple hiccups along the way. 1) LILO did not (could not) install and grub remains grayed out, and 2) I was unable to complete the installation due to an unknown issue. The unknown issue was that at the end of the GUI installation is asks which 'services' I'd like to enable. I picked some extras besides the default, and moved on. I then moved to the 'completed installation and restart' step; I clicked 'reboot' button and received an error message to the effect that 'reboot is not yet ready' (or some such thing). I tried moving back a couple steps to move forward again but the 'reboot' button remained (rather than switching back to a 'next' button), and I could no longer move forward in the steps because the 'reboot' button was still activated (IOW, if I clicked the button I received the same reboot error message I mentioned above). I went ahead and used the JWM(?) reboot option, and booted back to cd but to the TUI installer this time to finish installing LILO. I installed lilo successfully. However, I chose bootsplash-high and ended up with a very standard lilo (i.e. standard console text; white-on-black - no biggie). After finishing installing lilo I rebooted again and came to the ncurses 'finishing configuration' step of the installer. I went through these questions - some were redundant with the GUI installer - and finished/rebooted. It then rebooted back to the 'finishing configuration' steps again. Again, I answered the same questions and rebooted. Same - back to 'finishing configuration' questions. This is where I left off. I also noticed in the GUI installer there is an instance were 'password' is misspelled - 'passwrord'. I believe is when entering the user account password, but may have been for the root password. I'll try installing again via TUI later on, but thought I'd pass this along now. Cheers, newt P.S. I apologize if this is not the appropriate protocol for submitting bugs/comments for devel/alpha releases. I'm new to this 'newslist' and 'alpha-testing' thing. If I should proceed differently, please inform me of the correct protocol. Thanks again! Monday, July 6, 2009, 3:06:16 AM, you wrote: RL> I have uploaded a new iso for testing. Hi guys. @ Newtor - Actually, A1.9.5 is up there now... the installer has changed a lot from the last ISO up to now. ----------- Just wanted to give everyone an update. The installer is shaping up quite nicely thanks to the bug reports/tickets on vlcore.vectorlinux.com I think we're mighty close to being ablet o put this thing out for public testing. The latest ISO as of today is A1.9.15 which I have just tried along with the latest installer. Installation goes as smooth as can be for me... but then again, I wrote the thing, so it may have developed a relationship with me for all we know ;) There is one un-tested area still in the installer... Importing user accounts. The code is there, but no debugging has been done on it as of yet. I hope to get that polished up by next week. Anyway, This email is about the latest ISO. I've found a couple of hickups in the ISO itself. 1) The resulting installed system enters a endless configure/reboot loop 2) The xinitrc included in the skel points to an xfce session, which retults in kdm just looping around because it can't find it 3) KDE freezes on startup on my VBox VM. 4) The os-prober package is missing from the resulting installation. we need it there for grub configuration. @ Vector & @ Uelsk8s I have added my .gtkrc config files to the svn dep dir http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall/browser/deps Put these on the initrd in /root/ it makes the installer look a lot better @ lower resolutions. Again, everybody thanks for the bug reports. If you have not yet signed up, please do so @ http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/trac/vinstall |

Hello all, Here's my notes from the install tries using the A1.9.15 ISO. I am really liking the way things are shaping up with the GUI installer. I'm wondering if testing this in a vmware 5.x virtual environment may be causing some of the pitfalls I'm running into (???). Anyway, FWIW here are my notes during installation tries: >>> Preamble: vmware virtual install; using already partitioned hard drive; >>> custom/manual package selection. Also, in between trys I was simply >>> restarting the installer rather than rebooting, if that makes a difference >>> (gbr2 /root/speedy/vinstall-ng.gambas) - perhaps the 'fatal' flaw was being carried over to each new try??? >>> >>> VectorLinux label at top not fully showing - 'x' is cut off by almost half >>> >>> Description: "...correct disk space for" (looks incomplete) >>> Full Install: Install _everthing_ (spelling) >>> Minimal: _confuguration_ (spelling) >>> Comment: Full install has Titlecaps Titlecaps, Minimal has Titlecaps lower lower (consistency) >>> Custom: Unselect All doesn't warn about X11 packages whereas singally unselecting X11 does. >>> Custom: 2nd package selection page: last row is selectable but nothing is listed (remove maybe) >>> Custom: I unselected 'hplip' and I selected the last (empty) row and >>> received: "This application has raised an unexpected error and must abort. >>> [-1] Key already used: 'X11'. Step8.?.0" This untimately killed the GUI installer. >>> >>> Next try: unselected hplip, did not select last empty row, got to >>> Installation summary page, hit 'Back' button, hit 'next' button, and got this >>> different fatal error: "This application has raised an unexpected error and >>> must abort. [-1] Key already used: 'gutenprint'. Step8.?.0" >>> >>> Next several tries: Clicking 'back' and 'next' between the 'package >>> selection' and 'installation summary' screens consistently causes a fatal error. >>> >>> Next try: If I do not click back and next between those screens then the installation continues normally. >>> >>> The development crew: when they first begin rolling there's a flash of black, then they roll normally >>> The development crew: Uelsk8s - istaller (spelling) >>> >>> System Bootloader Configuration: Not sure why, but Grub is still grayed out >>> on my end. If I hit 'back' I get fatal error: "This application has raised an >>> unexpected error and must abort. [20] Bad argument. fmail.?.0" >>> >>> Next try: Lilo still does not install for me: "Lilo returned an error... >>> Check your values in this step and try again". Yet, the installer still moves >>> me forward. The values are all correct for my purposes (mbr, bootsplash-high, >>> 5 seconds, VectorLinux-/de. One detected OS: /dev/hda1, Vector Linux 6.0 Soho >>> Alpha 1.15 found on /dev/hda1, label: VectorLinux-/de, Initrd: initrd, Include >>> this OS is checked. Tried changing the name to just 'linux' but no go. >>> >>> Entering Root Password: 'passwrord' (spelling) >>> >>> Creating User Account: Bottom button (Import Existing User) button is vertically cut off about half. >>> Creating User Account: When I'm done creating a user I *assume* I'm supposed to click the 'Create User' button??? >>> >>> Network Config: I recall a post on the forum indicating that the domain >>> should be set to a non-live domain like (local.domain or localdomain) (maybe/maybenot) >>> >>> Installation Complete: It says I should click the 'Next' button to restart >>> but the button actually says 'Reboot' (consistency) >>> >>> Installation Complete: When I click the 'Reboot' button I get an error message: "Reboot not yet allowed" >>> >>> Upon manually rebooting: I boot to CD TUI installer to install lilo >>> ('standard' this time), and then reboot. I end up in same loop of the ncurses >>> 'Finishing System Configuration' (answer questions, reboot, finishing system >>> configuration, answer questions, reboot, finishing system configuration, ... ad infinitum) >>> >>> Haven't yet tried the TUI installer. Hope this is helpful. If any clarification is needed I'm glad to help. Sorry for long list but they are just notes I was keeping during installation tries. Seriously, I dont know what is happening with your tests... Let me ask you something... does your VM have active network connection? the ISO is built to update the installer live from SVN on boot, so if you no internet connection on the vm, you're using old installer on new iso. It appears to me that way, because of your description of the chopped X on the logo and grayed out grub option and the output from the lilo error. That is at least 2 weeks old. Before you run the installer, make sure you got internet connection ifconfig eth0 up dhcpcd eth0 cd speey svn up Then run the installer. I do appreciate your findings in my bad spelling... I will get those corrected. |
