I have the physical trunk interface and that is selected in the
virtualbox settings.

That works for Linux guests, as I tried with Fedora. The NIC was not in
promiscuous mode, so I assume an issue with FreeBSD in that case.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Someone on the freebsd-net list told me to switch off vlanhwfilter (an
option in FreeBSD to disable the VLAN filtering option in certain NICs).

Does the virtio interface in VirtualBox support such a feature?
