The Intel desktop class chipsets have a 4GB address space limit (in practice this gives around 3-3.5GB of RAM). He would need a Woodcrest Xeon for more. For AMD and lots of RAM I would buy a workstation class Opteron board because the cheap boards are usually not tested in bigger RAM configurations and don't have enough DIMM slots. For more than 4DIMMs on AMD usually dual CPU is needed. Xeon/Opteron also have the advantage to support ECC DIMMs which is a good idea with lots of memory. -Andi |
