Linux

User-union is a set of programs for POSIX/Unix/Linux systems that lets you have "union mounts" without special privilege. The result: change requests in one directory are actually performed in a separate parallel directory instead.

Lets you redirect reads and writes for all unprivileged programs
Does not require root privilege
Works on most Linux/Unix systems (because it is implemented using LD_PRELOAD)
Ideal for installing or packaging programs that do not honor DESTDIR
