Me too. I produced a patch which makes the (old) Ethertap interface obey
the permissions on the device node, which means all that needs to be done
with root permission is ifconfig tap$n ; chown $user /dev/tap$n
It should be in the list archives, for both 2.2 and 2.4 kernels. Making
UML work with it is left as an exercise for the reader.
