Hi List, I'm trying to create a root image. So far I'm creating the underlying file as a sparse file with: dd if=/dev/zero of=$OUTFS bs=1024 count=1 seek=$((20*1024*1024-1)) but I'm having kernel panics (not syncing) whenever I try to run various commands inside UML. So far I got kernel panics with top and updatedb. Please consider that I am able to boot into UML. The trouble begins when I'm trying to actually use the beast. Background: kernel.3.1.4, built with defconfig ARCH=um host OS = Slackware.13.37 Guest OS = Slackware.13.37 Host RAM=256MB Guest RAM= mem=128M Thank you for your time, -Stathis |

Why are you running this as root? There are safe ways to set up
networking while maintaining reduced privilege in the UML instance
itself.
Can you background it as non-root?

A programm running in the background must not attempt to perform any
I/O to the terminal, otherwise it gets a STOP signal.
If you want to run UML in the background you will have to: (warning: untested)
1) redirect the initial boot console output to a file:
umlinux .... > boot.log
2) use the "con=..." option to start the Linux consoles in a XTerm, or
network port, or anything that does not do I/O in the shell
terminal.
best regards,
Riccardo

Antoine, We cannot setup another DHCP server to run UML, even if it's not connected to the corporate network. How i wish you have an instruction of dhcp relay for UML in your site, :) Thanks for all the replies ! > Date: Thu, 1 Dec 2011 14:32:32 +0700 > From: an...@na... > To: ni...@ho... > CC: use...@li... > Subject: Re: [uml-user] Cannot bringup DHCP (2.6.39 kernel + Debian 5.0 rootfs) > > (snip) > > >>> Having been struggling this for 1 week, any help appreciated ! > >> Have you tried following these instructions: > >> http://uml.devloop.org.uk/howto.html > > Question here, if uml is running in my desktop, i need to install and run dhcpd in my desktop ? > If you are following the howto yes. Jeff, i think you are right, but our team roll out the possibility of setting up another DHCP server. After spent hours on the dhcrelay3 and bcrelay, i gave up.(I followed http://r3dux.org/2009/09/how-to-make-virtualbox-use-your-routers-dhcp-to-get-an-ip-address-in-linux/as i cannot find good docs on DHCP for uml using dhcrelay etc.) Linux has a huge problem on clear & good instructions for normal users.I have been coding for 15 years and i cannot make DHCP to work for 1+ week. Checking around, many senior linux friends never touched UML. I'm using static ip for uml now to catch up with the schedule.Would appreciate if you have good step-by-step instructions. The thing about DHCP is that the protocol is confined to an ethernet broadcast domain, and a TUN/TAP connection to the host is a separate broadcast domain from the LAN. It's a private ethernet with two hosts on it. DHCP will work if one of the following is true: The DHCP server is the UML host and dhcpd is listening on the TAP device a DHCP forwarder, like dhcrelay, is running on the host UML is bridged to the host's eth The bridging option puts the UML on the LAN on a par with any physical system on the ethernet. Yes (sort of).
OOM does not happen but swapoff() seems to run forever.
It's looks like the kernel is unable to unuse swapped pages.

Have a look at the `uml_mconsole` command.
If you pass the `umid=somestring` option to the UML, then you can kill it with:
uml_mconsole somestring halt
(Unless the UML is stuck hard, in which case you have to resort to
"kill"-ing the processes.)

It's not ideal, but I use a script like this:
#!/bin/bash
for pid in $(ps aux |grep uml |awk '{print $2}') ; do
echo "Killing $pid..."
kill -9 $pid
done
This assumes that only one UML VM is running.
I'm assuming there is a better way, but I don't know it.
