So, it happens so often you can't log in...

Does it happen only on the main console?  Have you checked it on a virtual 
console, the serial line, or in a telnet session?

Can you tell me exactly how you're running UML?

As for that networking thing, have you tried both interfaces to see if they 
both have the problem?
