It occurred to me that I failed to actually answer the first question.  "umn" 
is "user-mode net".  That's the kernel's network device.  As I said before, 
um_ifconfig needs to be setuid root in order for it to be configured right.

The panic is unrelated, and if it is reproducable for you, I'd love to know.
