I'm really fairly ignorant, but I'll have another go

mconsole (version 2) initialized on
/u/gshankar/.uml/MlJjKZ/mconsole

What result do you get, if you
   wc cowfs
   touch cowfs
   ls -l cowfs

If any of these fail, then those errors probably need to be resolved before 
uml can be happy.
None of these command lines explicitly tests file locking, or writing, but 
those things need to work as well.
