Wii specs:
NTSC-U
New Wii w/o Gamecube ports
d2x-cIOS v9
Game in question:
SP2P01 "Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort" (PAL)
Issue:
This game has 3 DOLs: player.dol (The init multi-boot menu for both games), the WiiSports DOL, and the WiiSportsResort DOL. The player.dol has boot priority. On an NTSC console there are two issues. If Video Mode is set to "System Default" neither Wii Sports nor Wii Sports Resort will boot from the player.dol menu and it will crash to black. However, when the home button is pressed and Wii Menu is selected the user can reboot to the Wii Menu without problems with the user needing to hold the Wii's power button to hard reset. If the user selects "Region Patch" or "Force PAL60" the user can launch Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort from the player.dol menu without issues. From the home menu the user is able to reset without problems. However, if he/she chooses to return to the Wii Menu the Wii crashes to black with the user needing to hard reset.
All relevant combinations of country, video, and fix strings have been used to no avail.
For single-DOL boot games this issue is normally remedied by making sure Video Mode is set to "System Default", Patch Country Settings is "ON", and Game Language is set to "Console Default."
Seemingly some settings are lost or overwritten when an alternate boot DOL is loaded from the player DOL.
I suspect that SMPE69 "Monopoly Collection" (NTSC) would have the same issue on a PAL console, or vice versa, since the same concept applies.

1. The game doesn't load the player.dol, but a main.dol
The player.dol is loaded only if you never watched the motion+ video.
If you use the loader's setting to browse dol file, it will not display the boot.dol, so you see the player.dol and the two game's dol. but it's the main.dol which is responsible to the game selection menu. player.dol has nothing to do with your problem.
2. "Patch country string" is only for Japanese games which can't display japanese text correctly. Do not enable this option.
3. if you use "system default" (NTSC) with a PAL game then there are a LOT of chance that the game will only blackscreen as video mode doesn't match.
Best setting is "Disc default" to set the video mode to the game's region.
I tested dol-reloading games, here are my result:
Wii PAL
Metroid Prime trilogy PAL (I don't have reloading NTSC games)
d2x v7
GX [r1209]
return to: GX forwarder (UNEO)
video mode: tested with both "system default" (or Disc default, as it's PAL too), and "NTSC" (patched to a different region)
Patch country string: ON and OFF.
The game is reloading the correct game's dol without black screen.
The return to is correctly passed to the reloaded dol
I can't reproduce your problem.
what you can try:
- disable Patch country string
- try a different d2x version
- try a game from your region which is reloading dols (all games with motion+, sam & max, metroid trilogy, etc.)

Yes. My mistake in confusing player.dol with main.dol. I should have known from previous research. It was late at night and I was keeping my mind occupied without adequate sleep.
Games from my region that reload DOLs work perfectly. I have Monopoly Collection and it goes back to the Wii Menu without problems. The issue is with loading a foreign region multi-DOL games.
Can you try a NTSC multi-DOL loading game on your PAL Wii?

I don't have a NTSC reloading game.
Maybe another user could try if the "return to" is working after reloading a dol from different game/console region?

I had this same problem the first couple of times I played kirby's speacial dream collection game if thats the correct title every time I tried to load a classic title game it would return to usb loader GX until I set usb loader GX to select a dol offset upon game load for that game then by selecting default after loading each dol individually from the menu it worked without needing to have the dol selection menu pop up every time I play the game. and I have an NTSC Wii and a pal copy of metriod prime trilogy and it works flawlessly.

I'm closing this issue, it's only a wrong video setting selected.
Use "disc default" instead of "System default", always use the game's region.
If you still have this issue, Try with [r1216] and [r1217].
