I've been using Univention UCS Core for some projects with a range of 100 to 500 users, it works smoothly however you need to make some tuning to keep everything working fine, and design a proper architecture to distribute domain services load. Support may be a problem on Core version because most forums are in Deutsch language, but manuals and literature are available in english. UCS is fully compatible with Windows OS so you can manage the domain even with MS tools. I love it!

I use UCS as platform for my home server and do recommend it to my consulting customers (mainly small-medium businesses). As I know a few people who work at the company I am little bit biased, but from a technical perspective it is definitely a platform everybody should take a look about. What I value the most is possibilty to unite linux, win and mac environments. Together with the app-center where I can easily testdrive new applications without the need to get into details about installation, packaging etc. With the new version (>4) the GUI was improved to a state where also windows administrators can easily manage this linux system. And now it is even free to use in the core edition. Try it! :-)
