I read somewhere that this happened for the base game because of the last 1.11 patch. Is it as simple as replacing the asset itself with the one from the expansion or an older version of the base game?

Honestly, I don't know that.

The issue must be from a combination of the assets and how HoT works internally; Running the original retail game with patch 1.09 applied and using nGlide to make it run on Win 10. Here the black color in the sprite for weapon nr 2 for the necromancer is almost entirely transparent meaning it looks a lot better and on top of that the projectiles for weapon nr 3 for the necromancer (wooden spikes) don't rotate and have a trail behind them. Patching the original to version 1.11 sees the same issue as with HoT.
But using the pak files from 1.09 in HoT doesn't make any difference visually, but in the original there is a difference between both the unpatched launch version, 1.09 and 1.11. Just by replacing the pak files.

This is a bug in game's assets. It does work correctly in Portal of Praevus mission pack.

Thanks for clarifying either way. Nice to know where the issue lies.
I'll report back if I can answer it myself.
