Basic Latin
all the control characters (which normally have no glyphs) show trash glyphs
but there are others

What do you mean with trash glyphs? Which font was selected? When I view Basic Latin the control characters have little squares that state the control sequence, e.g. [ESC], [BEL], ...

I recognize the glyphs as coming from the Miscellaneous Symbols range of Unicode. However, it is possible your viewer is getting them from a font that isn't even Unicode-encoded (that would be quite bad).
Also, I looked at the Basic Latin range using a different viewer (just a web page with automatically generated character entities). No funny characters appear in FireFox. Looks like a bug in your viewer.
