I'm active in a newsgroup where some people use trn, some use Google Groups, and some use other usenet agents, of various vintages.

TRN users provide a particular problem, since trn strips the high bit from bits, assuming 7 bit parity transmission. Nor does trn include Content-Type and Content-Transfer-Encoding headers.

The upshot of this is that trn turns modern, standards compliant posts into garbage when it quotes them, and later quotings can't fix it.

I propose to

  1. End the stripping of high bits - add 8 bit support.
  2. If a quoted post has the above headers, pass them along.

This should reduce the garbage trn is adding to usenet.
