Is there any way to install trinux to a usb key ?

Do you mean one of those portable USB (key ring) hard drives?

You couldn't boot from it it but you could use it like a hard drive to
load packages from. I think I did this from a Sandisk compact flash
reader, once -- I assumed they are supported in Linux.

Yes. I am not quiet sure is it bootable. BIOS in my computer allows me 
to boot from USB device. And i suppose you can make bootable partition 
on that device.
