Thanks for your suggestion, Helmut.  Here's what I've tried:

# rm /dev/ttyS0
# mknod -m 660 /dev/ttyS0 c 5 64
# setserial /dev/ttyS0 port 0x03f8 irq 4
/dev/ttyS0: No Such Device

It seems that trinux does not recognize my onboard serial port.  I've tried=
 this on 2 different machines and I keep getting the same result.  I'm re=
ally frustrated.

any suggestions?

Sorry - but I don't know how to handle onboard ports. I'd look into  
the "dmesg"-output and then into "/proc/..."
