[Trinux-talk] trinux and ne2000

Hi,

trinux tends to be a bit confusing in the sense that so far I found only =
very few version that recognize the ne2000 ethernet-adapter.
All the versions that do find it have some other disadvantage like not =
recognizing cds of producing some very strange errors.

After I tested all of them I finally ended up with the floppy-version =
"trinux-0.80rc2-ide".

with this floppy everything works EXECPT networking.
The trinux-website on the other hand sais that the ne2000 is by default =
recognized by the kernel.
And it does not say what to do if it is not recognized.

The adapter itself is ok, as some trinuxes, e.g. trinux-0.80rc2-net.img =
find it, while others do not.
So what is the trick here ?

Hi,

Trinux is a great concept, being a very small linux which is devoted to =
networking and security.

This is on running trinux within bochs, using an ISO-Image:

The file "boottrinux.iso" work almost fine in this context and can quite =
easily be expanded with other packages.
For some reason though it does not recognize the ne2000-emulation of =
bochs.=20

I set io=3D0x300 and irq=3D3.

The same applies to trinux-80rc2-2.4.5.iso from the webpage =
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/trinux/.

trinux-0.81pre0-2.4.5.iso from the same page does not boot at all, bochs =
just reports an error.

The floppy-versions (boot080pre1.flp and boot071pre1.flp) correctly find =
and configure the ne2000 under the same bochs-configuration.

Some other linux-distributions also do not recognize the ne2000 but can =
be configured with insmod oder modprobe ne and/or insmod 8390
This also does not seem to work with the trinux-ISO distributions.

Remark: boottrinux.iso is the only ISO-distrbution of trinux that I =
could expand with new packages (by extracting the boot-image, copying =
the files to the harddisk, adding new packages and recreating the =
image). With all the other ISO-files this did not work.=20
For that reason it seems essential for me to specifically use the =
"boottrinux.iso" and get the network working for this file.

Can you give me a hint on how to get the network running?

I'm starting to think it's a problem with trinux, or something within Trini=
x I don't know how to change.  I tried serial linix. (http://www.eskimo.c=
om/~johnnyb/computers/stl/) and it can talk to the port and LCD without a=
ny problems.

I'm really looking forward to using Trinux and many of the available packag=
es, but I want to be able to send output the LCD.  

Can anyone out there help?

Thanks for your suggestion, Helmut.  Here's what I've tried:

# rm /dev/ttyS0
# mknod -m 660 /dev/ttyS0 c 5 64
# setserial /dev/ttyS0 port 0x03f8 irq 4
/dev/ttyS0: No Such Device

It seems that trinux does not recognize my onboard serial port.  I've tried=
 this on 2 different machines and I keep getting the same result.  I'm re=
ally frustrated.

any suggestions?

For the most part, I've been successful with my 0.80rc2 2.4 release of Trin=
ux.  But now I'm stuck.  I'm new to the *nix scene and I'm having a terri=
ble time figuring out how to get output directed to my serial port so I c=
an take advantage of a Crystalfontz #634 20x4 LCD display with RS-232 Int=
erface @ 19200 baud.

I've tested the display on Win2K using HyperTerminal, so I know the display=
 works. I've tried #echo hi > /dev/ttyS0 with out success.  (this is how =
I intend to use it) I've tried to initialize(?) the serial port with the =
setserial command: # setserial -g /dev/ttyS*  Which resulted in the follo=
wing messages:
/dev/ttyS0: No Such Device
/dev/ttyS1: No Such Device
..

I verified the COM1 setting in the bios as IRQ4 0x3f8.

Searching the net pointed me at things like getty, mgetty, agetty, sgetty, =
ugetty, megetty, megettingcrazy.  But I was not ably to find any of these=
 (except the last one) on my Trinux distro. :)

Any suggestions?
