I use Trinux on my old laptop, mainly for wifi scanning and network monitoring. It is much more useful that Win98 in those tasks :-) The computer won't run any newer version of Windows and I can't afford to run X on it. Therefore, distros like Backtrack or Knoppix-STD are unsuitable for me. Trinux with its console interface, nice toolset and low requirements is simply ideal. However, it is grossly outdated. It has become nearly impossible to build any new software for it because of old library versions (I wanted Links with SSL and auth support and failed). I wanted to offer the admin of the Trinux project to take the project over and build a new version, however Mr Matthew Franz is nowehere to be found. (none of his 3 e-mails work) As far as I know, under such circumstaces a project ending with -ng is often built. Who would be interested to help me develop it? I'd like to base it on Debian 3.1 sarge, or maybe 3.2 etch to make it last longer. - We'd stay with the naive tgz packaging for now. In the first phase, I'd recreate a basic Trinux distro exacly as the old one, but with newest versions of the software. Next, I'd need packagers and testers, who would add tools and test them. In the next version, we could tweak the init scripts (did you find those bugs as well?), update floppy, CD, USB, network distros, write some HDD install scripts, modify packages and so on. Who is going into it with me? Reply to this mailing list or directly to wondra (at> volny.cz |
