Hi Matthew, First off, glad to hear from you! Next, a confession. I have to admit that I haven't used Trinux as much as I had planned when I first discovered it a couple of years ago. I had grand plans of outfitting all of our IDFs with old Compaq laptops running Trinux. I wanted to take advantage of the network monitoring tools along with setting up serial console access to our 6500 switches in each closet. Unfortunately I never found the time to put the plan in action, although I did give it a good try. (I wasn't able to get the serial support to work with my old Compaq laptops for some reason.)=20=20 Finally, my 2 cents. Since I haven't dedicated as much time to Trinux as I would have liked, I personally wouldn't feel good about asking you to continue the project. Not because I wouldn't love to see a new version to play around with, but because I don't want to make requests for your time without being certain that I can take advantage of it. HOWEVER, I ENCOURAGE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO *WOULD* BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN UPDATED TRINUX TO SPEAK UP! Mainly though, I wanted to write to tell you that all of your work on Trinux is greatly appreciated. It's a wonderful toolset and a great way to keep old hardware relevant. I think any project with a focus on utilizing older hardware is a noble one and has relevancy and importance for both the developing world and for those of us who want to see old hardware in use, rather than in trash heaps. Thanks for everything! Mike P.S. If you do develop a new version, serial console with minicom or similar would be very important for my application :) -----Original Message----- From: tri...@li... Subject: [Trinux-talk] Wow, people still use Trinux?! / Trinux LiveCD Based on Ubuntu http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/?group_id=3D3301&ugn=3Dtrinux I was shocked as hell today to see the download/web statistics on sourceforge. Can this really be true? Daily web hits 1600 and 5000? Must be an error. Downloads breaking 100? Since I (and probably most everybody else) basically considered the project dead, I figured it would be much much lower. Maybe the Internet has grown since '98 when I started this out.=20 Maybe Knoppix and all the Knoppix-knockoffs are getting 10,000 downloads a day and 100,000 web hits but this makes me think their still might be interested in a stripped-down, no frill security distro, and just maybe, the Trinux brand is worth preserving... Yes, like everyone else in the security industry, I've become horribly corporate over the past five-six years.=20 But enough late 90's nostalgia, I've been thinking about doing a stripped down (of course) version of the Ubuntu Hoary LiveCD that contains all the old trinux tools and more.=20 Sure there are probably a half-dozen or more Knoppix-derivatives, but who cares, I've got a few PII's that I want to be able to run Ubuntu LiveCD on without X. Current list of requirements (probably in order) - No more than 250MB ISO Size (probably smaller) - Fast(er), non-interactive bootup - No X (of course) - Easily support PII-class machines with only 64MB - Floppy configuration variables - Serial console Thoughts, flames, eery silence, all welcome... And if you haven't every used, Ubuntu check it out...=20 In it for the fun... - mdf --=20 | Matthew Franz md...@io... | | http://www.io.com/~mdfranz | ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: NEC IT Guy Games.
