The aim of the first release would be that users (primarily from mobile devices) would easily be able to file a report of trees they had seen, matched to GPS data, timestamp, user ID and some indication of their judgement of the health of the tree(s) and numbers(s).
So there would be initially a simple pick-list of tree species, which would show leaves and general form for identification, although in time I would like to add some pattern recognition to be able to upload a picture of the leaf identified using the mobile device's camera.

Basic tree types: Ash, Beech, Birch, Silver Birch, Copper Beech, Horse Chestnut, Oak, Yew, Larch, Conifer (possibly with subtypes), Sycamore, Hazel, Willow, Poplar, Maple, Elm, Cedar.
Data to gather:
Unique record ID, user ident, GPS position, Tree species, number of trees, judgement of health, timestamp.
User interface may offer sliders for numbers and health rating.
