Another year, another release. Version 6.0 is ostensibly a maintenance release as the pressing issue is the recent release of a new major version of Tcl/Tk (V9.0) which causes any tool such as ours to evaluate what may no longer work as it did in the past (major releases 8->9 are permitted to drop support for abilities deemed deprecated since the prior major releases -- some 28 YEARS ago)! Rest assured, TkDiff has come thru relatively unscathed. However it should be noted that you need not "delay" the obtaining of this release if you are not currently
running a V9.0 runtime . TkDiff 6.0 will simply adapt to your environment as long as it is at least V8.5. Yet be advised the prior release (TkDiff 5.7) will decline to function once it senses Tcl/Tk V9.0!!
Of the items needing attention (two), the one of significance involved the long standing usage of the Tilde character(~) when specifying file names, which no longer automatically follows the precedent of many command-line tools to represent an implied directory path when used as the leading character of a path name. Simply put, TkDiff has restored this behavior, if for no other reason than its what most command-lines will still continue to do, let alone being the long-standing usage within TkDiff!
Beyond that issue, some small repairs to inconsistent inline-highlighting; elimination of specific graphical accomodations for a highly outdated desktop environment (CDE); and other smaller items (see the CHANGELOG for details) occurred. However, there is an enhancement to the Dialog used when entering input information whereby every keystroke is not only monitored for updating other dialog elements, but will now provide visual feedback on whether a filename being hand-typed is or is not a REAL name. This feedback is mostly intuitive, but a complete description is available as a Help-topic, directly accessible from a new button on that Dialog. Reading is recommended, at least once.
As always, should you encounter any issues, we are here to assist. Maybe even leave us a review.
