On my Slack 11 Linux system configure blows up in the vicinity of line 10184:
checking system version (for dynamic loading)... ./configure: line 10184: syntax error near unexpected token `('
./configure: line 10184: ` case `(ac_space=' '; set | grep ac_space) 2>&1` in'
Is there a workaround?

I ran into the same error on Ubuntu Edgy while trying to build tix 8.4.0. I'm trying to build Python 2.5 which uses tcl, tk, and tix. For the fun of it, I tried a later release, tix 8.4.2. It built, but some of the unit tests failed. The Python community uses the tix 8.4.0 snapshot. I can't believe they can't build under Linux. I'll check their forums next.
John, did you find a solution?
