[TF] "north east west" -> "NEW" ?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this in tf.  I can get the
list of exits in a room from the MUD easily, but I want to reduce the full
names to just their initials to put in my status line.  This email's
subject has an example of what I want to do.

In Perl, it'd be a simple 's/\b(\w)\w*\W+/$1/g', but tf does not seem
blessed with such things, and I'm at a loss as to a good way to proceed.
Any suggestions?
