I think strace is pretty much useless
for that.
Try compiling timidity with debug info
and run it under gdb. Produce a stack
trace at a point of crash.
Btw, Illegal Instruction may also be a
binutils problem. Are you using the same
version of binutils when building
timidity with an older gcc?
