I think our first hesitation with using ace was that it was actually called bespin/skywriter at the time we were going to bring an editor/syntax highlighter in and was going to be part of mozilla products to edit for a single browser (firefox), but I found it superior almost in every way to codemirror (pre v1). I think even Jonny really wanted it to be integrate, but there wasn't actually a way at the time. Now move forward a year or so. Codemirror 2 comes out and it looking very promising. They both use the same techniqe for editing large documents, the lead developer of Codemirror 2 (Marijin Haverbeke) is actaully working with ace to make a unified syntax support. Codemirror has tons of energy and we've already integrated it. I think for the time being we should stay with codemirror, but if there was funding to bring ace in, I think that is possibly were the web is going. But both projects are very promising at this point though, a lot of energy.
