This is particularly important for monster repositories like the netbeans-main one, which contain nearly a thousand toplevel directories (though the //real// optimization for that one would be to give up on showing the last modified revision for toplevel directories, at least in the direct access case; doing this efficiently with the cache is the other challenge).
