yeah, I'll agree to a certain point, I played with rxvt, using the --font command line option to set the font, ie rxvt --font -adobe-courier-*-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-15 actualy works quite well. I suspect you can get rxvt, xterm and dillo working correctly with a resources file. however, the other packages, ie tarenetalla, and ica_wfc seem to try and load the correct font based on your locale which it needs the 75-dpi fonts to do. as for firefox, i'm not sure, it works though when you set the correct locale. ica is the bug bear. it refuses to work, even with the correct fonts and locale stuff loaded. however, it does work with sv & cs keymaps. i've tested these and it works 100% correctly. but with the pl one it doesn't. cs is based on iso8859-2 font set, so is pl. both have fairly identical locale and font setups. confused?, i am. btw, the iso8859-5 font encoding, where did you get from, as the xfree doesn't seem to come with it, or is the some kind of extra option you need to compile it? -----Original Message----- From: Igor Naumov [mailto:igo...@ho...] Sent: Sunday, 6 June 2004 04:56 p.m. To: Miles Roper; 'Radoslaw Dabrowski' Cc: Thinstation-General (E-mail); 'Amadeusz Szubert' Subject: Re: [Thinstation-general] Problem with XKB keymap I am not an expert in X in particular and in Polish in general :-), but here is my theory on what is going on there. Polish (as well as Russian) is using a different (from Western European) character set. I assume there may be several variants of the character map layout (this is the case in Russian). Now what happens is firefox knows about those variants internally (i.e. independent of X). And apparently it can do the translation. E.g. I installed a cyrillic font with ISO8859-5 encoding. But firefox displays pages in koi-8 (another variant of russian layout) encoding just fine. However in xterm I am getting russian characters, but they are all messed up (do not correspond to the keys). I do not think it's the keymap problem, I think it's the font encoding problem and the fact the xterm (rxvt) cannot do the translation. Either there is a way in X to configure the translation between different encoding variants (and I have some feeling that there is one) so that you do not need a font with another encoding, or you have to install a second set of fonts with proper encoding for xterm. I may be completely off the mark with my theory as far as Polish is concerned. Please correct me. Also, I am completely ignorant about ica.
