Martin, the initrd generated by Thinstation IS an .img file of a squashfs files system (just without the suffix - you can aways add it....). Normally with pxe you just point your dhcp server to the pxelinux.0 file and away it goes (loading the vmlinux & initrd you specify in the pxelinux.cfg/default file). I don't use the 3Com product so am unsure what it is asking for (and getting info from their website is a REAL pain), so can't help you on the specifics of that product.
