Looking at the kernel config for 2.2.2x, I'm not sure that there was
anything in there for SATA IDE (2.2.2x uses a very old kernel).

1 option may be to look at the bios and see if there is a setting that
allows it to operate in legacy IDE mode, otherwise we'll have to look at
a newer kernel.

If you do try a different bios setting, please show the output
from /var/log/messages.
