i'm confused what you typed in and what comes from a script.

the "normal way" is to:
-%<-----------------

$mkdir ~/OpenEmbedded
$cd ~/OpenEmbedded
$git clone git://thinstation.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/thinstation/thinstation thinstation
$. thinstation/env.sh
-%<-----------------

that should bring you into the build directory. here you just type:

-%<-----------------
bitbake thinstation-image
-%<-----------------
